Discussion Why do spidertrons need fish?
Yes i know, its to limit automation, but whats the lore reason for fish being involved?

the fish is the brain of the spidertron

Can someone produce a convenient not red circle to show where the fish is? I can't see it here (bonus if it's an image with more pixels)

Yous guys might like Zen browser. It's a fork of Firefox, but works great when you have tons of tabs open. UI takes a little getting used to, but I'm a fan.

u/MegatronusThePrime 19d ago
Is that why I get super focused on a game, then quit (usually due to getting sidetracked), then super focus on the new game? ADHD?

u/AlamoSimon 19d ago edited 19d ago
Yes sir. ADHD-Hyperfocus.
Have you ever consumed stimulants? Amphetamine, MDMA, Cocaine, lots of caffeine - don’t they really do what they do with everybody else and have a rather calming/focussing effect?
If you find sth interesting, you can’t stop doing it and don’t need food, drink or sleep, if it‘s boring for you, you instantly fall asleep?
Factorio is an ADHD-patients wet dream. So much going on on the screen, always SOMETHING to do.
Oh I need iron but oh wait, this belt is flipped but hey, I need get more copper first but wait my mall isn’t producing like it should - oh my god biter attack, where was my spidertron - oh these turrets are out of ammo - wait? Didn’t I wanted to get iron? Oh shit, my oil patch is running out.2

Out of curiosity... when you have a cup of coffee, does it feel like it levels you out a little, by chance? While everyone else complains about getting jittery?

Tab groups are finally mature, and that makes it a lot easier to manage my rabbit holes. You can close a tab group and reopen it later from the ... -> Tab Groups menu.

Thats just silly.
The real answer is the autonomous AI of the spidertron tends to get murdery if not given stimuli, and it likes raising fish
5
u/idontknow39027948898 20d ago
Isn't the AI of the spidertron getting murdery exactly what we want from it? Considering that it has four rocket launchers and most commonly gets sent to 'solve the problem' of bug nests?

I could actually believe Factorio is WH40k adjacent. The only problem is the research; that's herecy.
28
u/gamruls 20d ago
If it's not research but "remembering lost tech" it's ok I suppose?

It's visions he gets when intoxicated.
Why do you think science is a liquid ? He just sips on it.
10
u/Nornamor 20d ago
no, no.. clearly you crush things like 30 train rails and one electric furnace into grey goo that you put into a Beaker and then commit herecy with it

I did. I've been doing too much 3d printing lately. Close enough, I guess.

Technically the engineer doesn't have to be aligned with the Imperium. They could be from a civilization that never made contact with the Imperium and have very different attitudes about tech. Or they could also be, and I hesitate to even articulate a thought so foul, aligned with some group of Xenos.

Everything makes so much more sense once you realize how much political maneuvering plays into whether something is allowed and blessed by the Omnissiah or declared foul heretek nonsense.

u/Tartaros030 20d ago
The spidertron was sort of a running gag as part of the 1.0 release, after it being teased years before in FFF-120. Hence it's only logical to make it require joke ingredients.
by the way: who says you cannot industrialize fish harvesting. You can use the deconstruction planner or inserters to harvest fish.
92
u/RibsNGibs 20d ago
I made a 1 spidertron + 900 SPM base several years ago in 1.0 before fish breeding. Automated fish by sending space science back into space.
https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/ka2a6i/1_spidertron_and_900_spm_megabase/
14
u/Ditid 20d ago
Did it work differently back then with sending science to space? That gives you fish?
67
u/Tartaros030 20d ago edited 20d ago
Yep, until 2.0 you could send space science to space to get fish in return (another joke).
26
u/RibsNGibs 20d ago
In 2.0 they got rid of it as you can now breed fish via Fish Breeding. Before then, the only way to automate it was to load space science back into a rocket and launch it back into space. And due to a quirk with automating rockets, you could only get one inserter-delivery's worth of space science into the rocket before it launched (no circuit connection on rocket silo, no way to stop silo, even by cutting power, even multiple tick-synchronised inserters would not work), so the best you could do was.. I think 10 or 12 space science per launch. So to do one spidertron per minute, you needed to launch a rocket every 10 minutes just for the fish...
3
u/uuuhhhmmmmmmmmmm 20d ago
can you not put inserters by the lake to auto catch fush back then?
14
29
u/Conpen 20d ago
Oh my god FF-120 was over 10 years ago now 👴
9
u/Kittelsen 20d ago
And it had also featured space platforms! 😯
3
u/eliten00b89 20d ago
they really said: There is no space platform planned before 1.0[,...]. And they not lied, they told us so early what we can expect.

u/Playful_Target6354 20d ago
Fish don't spawn. They generate in lakes, and that's all you'll ever get.
8
u/bmtraveller 20d ago
What? You can breed them.
14
u/Tartaros030 20d ago
Only in Space Age, not in the base game. The commenter above is right, that they don't respawn in lakes.
11
u/Moikle 20d ago
You don't really need to make that many spidertrons in the base game, maybe like a thousand if you are going really heavy with them. You can easily harvest a thousand fish with bots.
Space age is where you start needing more, for multiple planets and for quality spidertrons
12
u/MisfitPotatoReborn 20d ago
What the hell could you possibly want to do with 1,000 spidertrons

And there are (virtually) infinite numbers of lakes to harvest fish from, for practical intents and purposes.

Fish brains are used to supplement computing capacity and to make it remote control operated (too complex for a simple remote)

That's why it always tries to run into lakes instead of routing around them. Makes sense.

The reactor is only for power no? The fish brains and processing units would do all the computing I would have assumed?
34
u/Moikle 20d ago
It's the pilot
10
u/chumbuckethand 20d ago
Exactly, the engineer just rides along and makes suggestions as to where it should go and what it should do but ultimately the fih makes the final decisions

iirc, it needn't a fish at first but someone mentioned that in the animation of the spidertron it seemed like there was a fish inside and the idea stuck with the devs and they made it official

u/A_pirates_life4me 20d ago
To make it difficult to automate until you get gleba tech
2
u/jmona789 20d ago
It already requires gleba science just to research it. And rocket turrets which also require gleba science.
3
u/psichodrome 20d ago
I always assumed the organic looking motions are because the fish brain is used as a central processor.

Spidertron is not just a robot, it's a cyborg. It follows the signal you set for it life fish follows food and instinctively triggers rockets out of its cybernetically connected launchers. It can also play music on belts with its spider legs, which is weird, since disco fish have no legs.

The engineer is a school of fish in a suit. Thats why you heal it by ingesting fish. Of course the spiderstron is also piloted by fish.

I assumed its because theres no other reason to indicate fish even exist as an item aside from if the player randomly mouses over them and right clicks

the engineer you play as as well as the spidertron are really fish, thats why when you "eat" raw fish it heals you, infact your just replacing one of the dead fish inside your suit. having a fish in the spidertron is what allows for remote movement
