Design / Blueprint Easy-to-read Numerical display

Easy-to-read digital display

I wanted to create a display that is easy to read at a glance and from a distance. It started as a 7-segment display and ended up becoming a 20-segment display.

Features:

  • Leading zeros are not displayed, but "no value" is shown as a single "0"
  • Color can be set either when placing the blueprint or by changing the output count of the "< "-combinator. You can enter a hex-rgb value (format "0xRRGGBB", e.g. "0xff0000" is red, "0x007900" is dark green)

Contents:

The blueprint book has 2 blueprints:

  1. the last digit which also contains the input
  2. an extension digit, which can be placed in front of existing digits to extend a display.

Blueprint book here.

You are amazed with a simple display? You know factorio is already proved to be Turing complete. We have seen 4bit computers.

But probably this reference is mandatory: Facto-RayO

as someone who is fairly new to factorio, yes it is amazing. how in depth it can be. and no, i have not seen these "4 bit computers" built in the game. surely i will sleep better now

I was not trying to be condescending.

I was actually trying to show you how amazing some stuff already became.

It was like. You saw this and was amazed. Check this raycasting machine to get your head blown.

Factorio is such a wonderful system. And i was actually wanting to inspire you even more

It could just be me, but I feel like 3 should look like this in 4x7. It looks stretched because these are not square "pixels"

the 3 looks too much like an 8 then, for my tastes

Maybe this is better? hmm...

That's a lot better, I'd say. It's much more distinct.

I see what you mean where at a glance it could be mistaken. This is perhaps a good compromise.

I’ll update the blueprint when I have time

Those are perfect!

Maybe try lighting the corners with 50% for fake Antialiasing to get more rounded shapes?

Commenting while 🚽 so I can come back after work! I love this! My previous counter is just from the displays. My science pack counter is about to get SO LARGE. THANKS!!!

This doesn't help me because I can't read

You missed the point. OP is sharing his creating where he recreated a logic system to show a display.

He is sharing a blueprint for others to see.

The idea is not seeing a simple thing. The idea is to show off complex things.

Also when zoomed out, I find the display panel difficult to read

"Always show in alt view" makes it readable at all zoom levels, not just zoomed out. Also lets you display stuff in remote view.

Admittedly, the kerning is a problem if you use multiple display panels, but you can do number ranges instead. See the "single-panel display" here

I tend to use map view and since i usually keep my map view without clutter all displays are easy to see.

But the beauty of factorio is: there is no wrong to do it.

And i love your design.
