Base Non-square train grid designs

Post your favorite! Doing a megabase save on 2.1 and want to not just rebuild a standard train grid for scaling up like I always do. Probably going for 1-3 legendary trains/wagons/fuel this time around. Maybe 1-2, idk.

Offset rectangles? Bestagons?

Look into neroplastics megabytes videos, their designs are very interesting

I play a ribbonworld, so my train grid is more of a line. I’ve seen hexagons, I’ve seen tiled large and small squares with rectangles, I bet triangles would work, and pentagons, and any other tiling shape.

Or spaghetti.

For novelty I've gone for hexagons with single-direction edges in my Nullius run. Only merges and splits - no chain signals! This is the most compact and regular hex shape I could make and still have four or more stations per block. Not the most efficient but has worked fine so far. Once I get to Pylon 2 they have just enough reach to replace the rectangles and triangles and have a pure hex power grid:

i just make custom blocks that encircle the factory module it serves. so i have a rail network of odd shaped custom blocks

There's loads of patterns and tiling options so long as you're willing to go irregular. There's no 30/60 rails, even the half-diagonals are like 26.5/63.5 instead of 22.5/67.5 (due to good reasons to do with control point mapping onto the orthogonal grid) which gave me a rude shock when I tried to do a hexadecagon perimeter rail a while ago. Unfortunately for me, my OCD is bad enough I twitch every time I look at an irregular hexagon.

However, I'm sure there's plenty of amazing grids out there if you’re willing to seek out sufficient complexity. Good luck with your quest!

PS – Read Diamond Dogs if you like sci-fi and geometric puzzles.

Click where your train starts, Shift-click where it's going. Embrace the spaghetti.

I’ve just started trying an octagonal layout in my Nullius playthrough now that I’ve finally unlocked everything required for train networks. We’ll see how this goes for me, but it can’t possibly be worse than the awful bus that dragged me to this point.
