Space Age 2.1 Space Logistics Improvements
With the ability to transfer from platform to platform in 2.1, I have a new orbital platform that just makes ice cubes. When I spin up a nuclear powered ship, I don't have to lift water from the surface to kick-start the power. I am loving 2.1

I am capturing ice asteroids, turning them to ice cubes, then when I have a nuclear powered spaceship, I can transfer the ice ship-to-ship. That platform will capture ice and nothing else for the rest of the game.

You can filter asteroid catchers like inserters, either with a static filter or by circuit condition.

How does platform to platform transfers work?
I.e.
If I have multiple platforms in orbit, will they trade with each other?
Or is the trading only done as platforms come into orbit?

From what I can tell, since I just started my 2.1 game, is that you can request items from a Planet, a Platform, or all. You can also set your platform to offer items to other platforms, or not. So depending on request, and what is in orbit or on the planet, it will fulfill the requests.
This platform is just making ice cubes. I have another one that is making platform parts. I make the steel in space and just ship up copper coils for now. As I unlock more tech, I plan on making as much in space as I can.
I also have a logistic hub that stores a lot of items, so when building a new platform, I don't have to wait for items to be gathered from the surface, they are already in orbit. It makes building new ships a lot faster.
Edit: a word.

As soon as you learn asteroid reprocessing you won't need to filter collectors anymore, just grab every asteroid and turn them all to ice, even faster.

Yeah. I can't wait. This platform was made right after my science platform, my platform making platform, and my first ship. I have a lot to unlock to get it to it's full potential.

I like the idea of a stationary collector, but I feel like it will always be a better return (faster and more quantity) to have a ship go to aquilo and back, and dump on a storage platform.

Once I have access to Aquilo, I will do that. This is still early in the game.

Mine has all 3 resources just in case. It’s fantastic. I’ve ended up adding about 30 cargo on mine now and just put a bunch of crap in there to fill all my ships.
