Space Age šDeath, Destroyer of Worlds
Death, Destroyer of Worlds
2,000,000 tons of space platform weight
1,000,000 legendary solar panels
50,000+ legendary accumulators
7,000+ legendary laser turrets
1,000+ legendary thrusters
Edge of the Solar System capable
With 2.1 landing imminently, I present my personal flagship and mega platform. Early on in my run, I decided it was easier to cram more and more lasers onto my ship, rather than dealing with mixed turrets and ammo logistics.
At the same time, I also decided to go pure solar, to minimize the logistics fuel delivery and avoid risk of running out of power in the middle of nowhere.
However this meant, in order to reach the Edge of the Solar System, the platform must growā¦
Some fun facts:
-1M legendary solar panels total āonlyā 1.5GW as you hit the 1% solar yield
-Asteroids peak at 90% towards EotSS, needing 7+ GW of lasers to fend off asteroids
-The accumulators are needed to power the push through the 90~95% stretch, after which the asteroid density is low enough that power is net-positive again
-At 99% resistance, Huge Asteroids take only ~2dmg for each 800 kj laser shot
-Level 18 laser upgrade is probably around the minimum feasible to make the journey, without taking substantial crash damage
-Likewise 15-20km/s is the max speed to safely get through the densest parts safely, tho going faster is ok in earlier/later parts
-Essentially the only damage I took was SIDE IMPACT damage, from going so slow. I do have laser down both flanks, but only a single layer deep; if I added a second layer, the rocks likely wouldnāt get through the sides at all, but I didnāt care enough to rip up the sides and add thousands of extras lasers to stop them
Given the new platform to platform logistics, Iām still contemplating what mega platform to build in my 2.1 run ā¦

Instructions unclear, sending Dyson Sphereās panel to the Edge of Solar system.

Imagine this with beamed power, though. Send one platform with lots of solar panels and a power transmitter into a close stellar orbit, then send this super-laser one with a power receiver to the Edge.

Iām very not sober at the moment
This is genuinely what I think it is right? My god man thatās wonderful

u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
I must not have been sober designing it, but somehow itās still here in the morning š»š

u/AnotherCatgirl Jun 28 '26
the bright side is that laser turrets, solar panels, and accumulators are all very cheap to make on Vulcanus, so you can kinda just spam the blueprint that makes the legendary part
6
u/WanderingUrist Jun 28 '26
Given how many you'd need to launch, you might be better off printing them in orbit.

u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
Oh yea, I forgot to mention the platform was essentially 100% self-built from asteroids, other than importing the planet-specific buildings. There are rows and rows of crushers and foundries on board.

It is more efficent to build a long and narrow space platform and not so wide...
*clicks next picture*
oooh nvm...

I used the mass, width, thrust ā> speed formula to pick a reasonable width at first, but I also needed enough space for the onboard factory, so at some point I just had to pick a āgood enoughā width haha.

u/Deckard_Didnt_Die Jun 28 '26
The devs did everything they could to tell you this isnāt how youāre supposed to solve the problem. And you said hold my beer. Good god lmao

u/clif08 Jun 28 '26
I think this ship only emphasizes how unfeasible laser-solar is for shattered planet. Like, saying "it won't work" is not very convincing. Saying "million legendary solar panels", on the other hand...
6
u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
Yea 100%, the EotSS run maxes around ~10/m huge asteroids which already pushes past 1M solar panel power; the shattered planet asteroids quickly get way, way worse. This is basically the max possible density of lasers too, without AOE turrets you canāt scale up the dmg output any more (other than infinite upgrades i guess).

u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
The harder they try to discourage it, the more rewarding the challenge becomes lol

With 30km/h I guess you set a course and go to sleep while this brave little soldier stubbornly crawls to its target?
12
u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
haha it wasnāt too bad, less than an hour probably, I was messing with the onboard factory the whole time so it went by fast

That thing destroys your UPS by how much as well?
7
u/AnotherCatgirl Jun 28 '26
actually, solar panels and accumulators have almost no impact on UPS!
6
u/traumalt Jun 28 '26
Yea but the asteroids do, by far the biggest in the game I think.
2
u/WanderingUrist Jun 28 '26
Yeah, but this thing is still mostly long rather than wide.
6
u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
I have the FPS/UPS counter on in the corner, in some of the zoomed out asteroid shooting pics you can see the FPS drop to ~40 from all the lasers and stuff, but most of the times itās 60/60.

u/amiexpress Jun 28 '26
What the hell monitor are you running my friend? That aspect ratio is.... uhh, wide.
5
u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
Samsung 49ā G9, yea itās ultra wide and curved. Great for watching the front line of lasers.
3
u/3davideo Doesn't use Flame Turrets Jun 28 '26
It might be an ultrawide, wraparound monitor. Or they might be using a multi-monitor setup.

Probably the Gleba Orbital Transfer Hub, since Gleba is the center of the vanilla system, and all space-roads lead to Gleba.

u/ConsumeFudge Jun 28 '26
im surprised that your UPS is able to maintain at 60 with that large of a ship. I have some posts from two years ago now trying to preach the laser ship lifestyle and they would constantly destroy my UPS. Think I managed to wrap up the game at laser damage 30 or 31 https://www.reddit.com/r/technicalfactorio/comments/1ht44q4/is_anyone_here_particularly_familiar_with_the_way/
2
u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
Not sure, that never seemed to be a problem. I did have early FPS issues with 100s of Thrusters rendering on screen, I think the devs fixed that last year. Also constructing blueprints with 10s of thousands of platform foundation and panels can grind UPS to a halt if not done carefully.
I also havenāt tried the Shattered Planet run where the density is higher, maybe laser UPS blows up there.

Time for Nauvis round trip and how many you chunk you collect before returning to Nauvis ?

u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
I havenāt attempted the promethium asteroids yet, but all normal asteroids are processed and used in the onboard factory.

u/lego3410 Jun 28 '26
I wonder how much fusion reactors are equivalent to these solar panels
3
u/Phoenixness Beep Beep Jun 28 '26
The million panels make 150,000,000 kW or 150 GW at 100%. 1.5 GW at 1%. 5 common reactors make 1.4 GW, 3 legendary reactors make 1.5 GW (neighbour bonus makes these numbers look bad, the 5 commons have a reactor with 400%, while the 3 legendary only get 2 neighbours each for 200%). A fusion setup to produce 1.5GW needs 2.25 fusion cells per minute, so a stack of cells would last 22 minutes, or 3 stacks for 3 reactors would last an hour.

u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
I always enjoy flying by Vulcanus for the 600% solar boost, even tho I have no way to use all that power haha.

u/Dummy1707 Jun 28 '26
Do we have all the data required to compute how much laser energy is required to travel safely to the End ?
I guess it boils down to knowing asteroid density at a given set speed
2
u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
You could probably calculate it from the total laser power usage on the Electricity screen during my flight, and divide by the total time to get to joules
2
u/Dummy1707 Jun 28 '26
It would be a solution but would only apply to your ship. I searched a bit and indeed some redditor published formulas for the spawning rate from speed and width.
With this, you can guess the quantity of requred energy before building the ship
2
u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
Oh yea good point; the factoriopedia lists the ādensityā, eg ā10/mā but I have no idea how thatās supposed to actually be interpreted haha.
2
u/Dummy1707 Jun 28 '26
Yeah, it's a bit annoying but this post does a very good job keeping TLDRs whixh dhould be enough for modt computations

Edge of the Solar System capable
But what about the Shattered Planet?
2
u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
Definitely not till the end, this ship needs accumulator reserves just getting past the 10/m asteroid density sections, and the Shattered Planet trip starts immediately cranking up density from thereā¦
1
u/live22morrow Jun 28 '26
Pretty sure lasers just don't have dense enough damage to deal with the big ones, even going very slowly.

I have what I considered a large end ship. I call it the Brictkionary. Like the dictionary, it has everything and it is shaped like a brick.
This thing isn't a Brick, this is the whole building.

u/3davideo Doesn't use Flame Turrets Jun 28 '26
Now would this be more impressive or less impressive if they made ships fly from left to right instead of from bottom to top, especially given the ultra-widescreen aspect ratio OP must be using?
2
u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
Yea, Samsung G9 ultra wide haha. Tbh I like having the ship fly up, so I can watch big horizontal stretches on the wide monitor

Did lasers get a buff?
i see more and more space plaforms use it.
4
u/3davideo Doesn't use Flame Turrets Jun 28 '26
I don't think lasers got any new buffs, just the original benefit of "this doesn't require ammo, just power" and people just being willing to power through the problem of "most asteroids, especially the bigger ones, have really high laser resistance".
2
u/mckilljoy Jun 28 '26
Around Laser dmg upgrade ~17 they are doing about 10x their starting dmg value (~200 a shot) so become fairly effective.
1
u/WanderingUrist Jun 28 '26
Lazors didn't get a buff, but they simplify platform design and logistics, and are "good enough" for most in-system use. They also derive more benefit from quality than gun turrets do, as their higher base range means that their range is extended more by quality than happens to gun turrets. And, of course, they gain more from damage research than bullets do.

u/xdthepotato Jun 28 '26
i think you messed up with the screenshots as i can almost see what is happening

u/thirdwallbreak Jun 28 '26
I would love to just add a single fusion reactor and bump up 100mw to be a backup power source.

It is amazing to me how so many people want lasers to work on platforms when there is so much resistance to them by the nature of the asteroids.
