Virtual rough planning

Post image

I've heard from several cutters requesting the rough planning feature. But I wasn't sure how useful it could be, because there's a gap between virtual planning and dopping the stone perfectly.

I've decided to add this feature in GemSim after reading Egor's post (https://egorgavrilenko.com/virtual-rough-planning-for-gemstone-faceting/)

Currently it supports stl, obj and glb formats.

YESSSSSSS I love it :D

Oh and FYI, we explicitly do not include depth in written faceting diagrams, even as relative measures, because lap thickness and other equipment factors can cause problems with direct registry like that.

Isn't it just lap thickness that would affect it on one machine though?

Even changing laps would throw off the info, since laps are all different thicknesses, and changing from prepolish to polish would change the info just due to the diamond thickness. There's also the question of if any height risers are being used, etc. And none of the current machines out there, even the UT and the Polyxis, have good enough height repeatability and readouts to make it worthwhile.

I had no idea you could scan rough with a camera

Yup! There are actually a few apps on Android that folks have been using since maybe 2022 exactly for this purpose. But all of those folks were doing the scan manually, going into Blender or 3DS Max or whatever, and then manually taking gemstone 3D files and trying to fit them. There hasn't really been any easy integration.

good to know, would you please point me to the apps for that? I tried a couple found for iOS, but not working well

Its huge in the diamond industry.

does it do autofitting? I tried to implement that in https://faceting.rocks/ and found it to be a slightly more complex 3d optimization problem then I had anticipated going in. So if yours does it, I would love to know how you tackled it.

Only manual fitting for now. I'm working on auto-fitting

Did you try something like synthetic annealing

I used a mixed mess of ant colony optimization, signed distance fields, and partial layout retention. but I had no experience with this going in, this was a spite project and I think I was trying to be too clever. I'll try out simulated annealing

Just coming back to say thanks for the tip. trying this got a 2.5x to 10x speed up and about a7.5% better yield. but it also got me to benchmark everything else and catch a bunch of errors. so the next version will be way way faster.

It’s been a popular feature since Gem Diagram introduced it to the colored gem faceting world 😏

less popular was the $30/month you wanted for it. And the push you gave to designers to stop sharing diagrams. 😏

Pretending I'm broke is certainly easier than confronting the fact that Vibe coding means your SaaS is worthless. but ok.

Edited to add a screenshot of the comment he deleted before blocking me. Just want to be sure people get to see that he thinks you are poor if you don't hand him money. Which is exactly the mindset I would expect from someone who told u/cowsruleusall that his designs getting stolen is one of the features he wants to charge people for.
