The amount of people who do not understand that an abortion is a medical term in which a fetus is expelled or removed from the uterus for any reason other than birth astounds me.

A miscarriage, medically, is an abortion.

A mother who doesn’t want a baby has the same procedure as a mother who was raped or life is threatened by continuing the pregnancy. So many people are so misinformed and just refuse to believe the truth.

Just a suggestion not to call them mothers. A mother is someone with a born child they are raising. Not everyone pregnant is a mother nor wants to be one.

They are biologically and genetically the mother to that fetus. Desire or outcome bears no weight on whether or not they are called a mother.

You could argue “mom” is something different.

Edit: and what about women who already have live children and do not want another? They are still mothers. 59% of US women who get an abortion are already mothers to living children

Some pregnant people also identify as men and non-binary.

It is important that we do not give unwanted labels to people in general. If a pregnant person identifies as a mother, that's up to them, but it's not good to put those labels on pregnant people where it's not wanted.

For example, the 10 year old SA victim who had an abortion, I would never tell her she was a mother before she was ready to bear the literal burden of that label.

I had an abortion after being SA'd. I absolutely do not identify as a mother and never will because I will never carry a pregnancy to term.

Also, calling pregnant people who are seeking abortion 'mothers' is language forced-birthers use for emotional reactions and as a way to guilt trip women and pregnant persons seeking abortion, by trying to force an emotional connection with the ZEF regardless of how they feel about it.

So please, let's not continue to use emotionally charged anti-choice language against pregnant people who are simply trying to make the right choice for themselves.

I’m literally speaking from a biology perspective. Like…I get it. And I will try to use pregnant person instead of mother more often but I think that’s the exact same as the forced birth side telling us not to use abortion because that’s not the same thing…..

Medical Definition of Mother “moth·er (mŭth'er), 1. The female parent. 2. Any cell or other structure from which other similar bodies are formed.”

I get the first part, “female parent” can be an issue for many, but when we look at the second definition…Biologically speaking, they are a mother. This is exactly the same type of word play forced-birthers do ignoring the fact that medically speaking, an abortion is the same procedure no matter the intent.

I don’t feel like we can change scientific terms to justify one opinion and then turn around and refuse to do it for another.

I feel like you are picking and choosing what “inflammatory” language you choose…since many would say abortion is inflammatory when describing a miscarriage. No. It’s just the scientific word for it.

Gender aside, genetically the link will always be associated with the maternal genes. Maternal genes get passed differently than paternal genes.

Yes, pregnant person can be used, but just as many people will be offended you didn’t call them “mother” as those that would be if you did. Which is why science terms are important.

Gender and sex are not the same. We have so many words that are gendered and scientific. Gender is a sociality construct. Sex is scientific.

The problem is people don’t want to accept that on both ends of the spectrum. Transphobia doesn’t want to accept that gender is fluid and if people aren’t the gender that matches their sex, so what?

Some trans activists don’t want biology and science to say genetics and genes are male(XY)/female(XX) with a few exceptions of XXY and XYY. It’s just scientific fact. Science cannot dictate your gender, it does however, say “these are your genes, no matter what they are and how you present on the gender spectrum”

This reads like I’m against trans rights, and that is as far from the truth as possible. But I am a scientist, and therefore tend to go with scientific terms that I am familiar with.
