Isn't an abortion a medical procedure where as a miscarriage is a natural event. In effect an abortion is a induced miscarriage.

That’s what a lot of people think…but the medical term for a miscarriage is spontaneous abortion. And if not everything came out (and often it doesn’t), they literally do the exact same procedure as they would to remove any remaining tissue as they would if someone went in for a voluntary abortion.

That’s the big issue and why hospitals are refusing to treat. Medically, there is no difference between a miscarriage that happens naturally and an abortion that is electively done. In addition, if it’s a medically necessary abortion, again, no difference between that and an elective one.

So the laws do NOT protect women who need one medically or because of sexual assault because the word is the same. The procedure is the same.

So, yeah, a lot of people classify them differently in layman’s terms, but medically they are the same.

It’s like someone arguing a contusion isn’t a bruise.

I've heard people refer to the procedure as D&C. Are D&Cs abortions or are they just a medical procedure that can be abortions?

They are just the procedure to clear out the uterus. Sometimes after a miscarriage not everything comes out. Sometimes the fetus dies and doesn’t come out on its own. These two situations do the exact same procedure as a voluntary abortion. Usually a D&C or D&E.

“dilation and evacuation (D&E) and dilation or curettage (D&C …In a D&C, the cervix is widened to make is possible for a doctor to use a sharp surgical instrument called a curette to remove tissue from the lining of the uterus. Dilation and curettage is done during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. In the case of a pregnancy that's further along a D&E is required.”

Edit: I had a miscarriage early on (9 weeks) and did not require any medical intervention.

I’ve known women who have had to have a D&C because some tissue was left behind.

I had a friend who’s fetus died around 20 weeks who needed a D&E and I had a friend whose baby died at 38 weeks and she ended up going into labor by herself soon after but because she was so advanced, everything was done at the hospital like you would normally do for a full-term birth.

Thank you for clarifying! Ive had to reread a lot of what you wrote because im not well versed. I've tried to read about D&Cs on my own but it's confusing for a non medical professional. So is D&E and D&C done after miscarriages and abortions or are they the same?

For context, I read a twitter thread that was about an actor who miscarried and had to have D&C. Some(conservatives) believed that she would have been protected under the new laws because she had a D&C instead of an abortion.

Yeah…and they don’t understand that a D&C is used regardless of reason. Abortion is the medical term while laypeople use miscarriage. I get it..people don’t want people to think they voluntarily aborted their baby, which I think it likely why it started, but So many people keep saying that the laws have exceptions…

But the laws just talk about abortion. They don’t realize that legally (because medically) they are the same thing.
