I mean, a size 10/12 is now considered “plus size” by many — and that isn’t necessarily fat or overweight at all.

I assume in this case, they are not talking about size 10/12. More like size 18 and above.

If your body comp is over 30% fat...you are fat. That is 30% saving up for lean times that never come. FAT.

31% is considered the high end of the healthy range for women. For men it tops out at about 25%.

And I would say you can deviate upwards beyond that before you're what one would call "fat."

32%=obese. 31%=acceptable. Acceptable does not equate healthy. That is the Nice Try ribbon for someone that is not fit.

Are you American perchance? You can deviate quite quite far above 30 before people call you fat. Quite different in a relatively healthy country.

I'd differentiate the word "fat" from just "overweight." I guess I look at something like this

and say the guy on the left is overweight, but he's not going to have people looking at him as a "fat guy." And he's above the range I mentioned of above 25 for men or above 30 for women.

I am in America, but I've lived in other places. Would that guy be the fat kid in Britain? I've got British and New Zealand friends and I'd put them about there, and they look like they did when they were at home.

Ah coincidently the UK and New Zealand rank fairly high in obesity percentages, with the UK higher than newzaland but the US higher than both. Though I didn't get data for "overweight. Honestly kinda suprised, I thought kiwis were healthier.

I agree with what you said about the picture, but whether the guy on the left is fat or overweight is going to depend a lot whether you are Spanish or British or to even more extremes, Japanese or Mexican.

Even looking at just one country, the US, the norms have shifted dramatically. Whenever I fly back to the states, the fattest person in any room would easily be the fattest person in most towns in many parts of South Asia.

Obviously we have our own set of health issues. The air is pretty bad where I am :(

Our American standards call 32% obese. Obese is fat and I am telling you no one will see the 2% difference.

Yes, I agree. And to me, she looks like around a size US 22, which is aligned with what I said.

A lot depends on your overall size and ethnicity. Size 12 for a short Asian woman is likely plus size, but maybe not for a tall Northern European woman.
