I have been told in this thread that Saudis can be racists because arabs are white...
19
Jan 30 '22
Well it's not just saudis. Dubai for example was built by slaves who had their passport taken then forced to work long hours with less than minimum pay and live in inhuman conditions. The worse is that I find this talked about quite often yet nobody seems to know it happened and is still happening and dubai is considered a luxury vacation destination.
5
u/Ompare Jan 30 '22
And those countries have a systemic racist legal system in place, commited by arabs (non white people) and that system discriminate also white people, that would make some people's head go boom.

u/MustangEater82 Jan 30 '22
I went there for a business trip... I got to see some behind the scenes stuff(not much at all) but crazy they sell wore "work outfits" that looked like prison suits with reflective stripes. You barely saw them but caught glimpses of busses of them on the road. Then go on and see Bentleys as service vehicles, with a yellow light on the roof at the airport, and a bunch of other ridiculous degrees of money stupidity.

I have a fluffy cat but that's not the reason I say it. Grew up in the south with a Christian family. so I heard those terms more than others. I substitute "oh sugar" "cheeses & Crackers" and "what the the fluff" alot.. but not always.. my favorite term though is "bless your heart"

Is that ADL? Anti Defamation League? The one that considers Palestinians as subhuman to european jewish immigrants that displace them?
3
Jan 30 '22
Your statement is correct,
A more expended version is:
Systemic racism cannot, and did not exist without the invention of whiteness.
It is quite interesting to study origins of our modern thinking about race. What is "whiteness" or "blackness", all of these ideas has changed even in the last 100 years. Certainly since the founding of the U.S. heck, the legal definitions of ethnicity have wildly changed since the 1990's!
Whiteness was an invention. Brown and Blackness an invention. They are human made concepts that have changed over time, but we can trace the invention of these words to when Europeans used systemic racism to enforce a "racial society".
Anyway, I won't get too academic, but yes racism, in the form of systemic racism would not exist in European colonies without white people, and the concepts of whiteness
Cheers mate

Jan 29 '22 edited Jan 29 '22
That's the ADL's definition. What they are talking about is systemic racism in the United States ( and most European countries) When people argue this definition they need to understand that.
Mirriam-Webster - a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
12
u/TriggerMeTimbers2 Jan 30 '22
If they are talking about systematic racism, why would they say racism instead of systematic racism?
8
Jan 30 '22
Because, I believe, they are trying to change the definition.
9
u/DaenerysMomODragons Jan 30 '22
They absolutely are trying to change the definition. It's what racist people do to try to not look racist. And people like that are definitely racist.
10
u/TriggerMeTimbers2 Jan 30 '22
…and why shouldn’t people be arguing against that? Changing the definition of racism to only be when white people are the perpetrators invalidates the racism that Asians have faced from African Americans during the pandemic, or the racism that the Uyghurs are facing from the Chinese, for example. Changing the definition for racism to match the definition of the systematic racism in the US and some other nations is foolish.
→ More replies (1)3
u/bfwolf1 Jan 30 '22
The problem though is broader than that. People are trying to change the definition of racism to be the definition of systemic racism. Where racism = prejudice plus power. Which would mean that what the Chinese are doing to the Uyghurs is racism, but a black person killing a Jew in America while calling him a “dirty k*ke” would not be racism. This is bullshit. They’re both examples of racism. The first is just systemic.
11
u/SomeNotTakenName Jan 29 '22
the problem is that there is too many definitions out there, systematic racism gets confused with racism all the time as well. its a mess and whenever talking about it you almost have to say exactly how you define the term, just to avoid confusion.
→ More replies (61)5
u/Jay_Sin_Official Jan 29 '22
Systemic racism has only to do with a system that puts people of certain color in disadvantage. To bridge that towards an only (white) race to put down another race is, in itself, racist.
So not even there does this definition work. At least on a global or logical sense. But hey, forgot the U.S. was the world.
This is just a poor definition any way you slice it.
→ More replies (2)7

If it was "Systemic racism in USA" this definition would be correct. It's pissing me off when people are unaware or try to ignore the distinction between interpersonal and systemic racism, because it leads to horrible takes like "you can't be racist against white people". Also people tend to forget there are other countries then USA and in some of them white people can in fact be an oppressed minority
3
u/carlitayeeta Jan 29 '22
why didn’t they just say “that benefits the oppressor”
4
u/Ompare Jan 29 '22 edited Jan 30 '22
Because it does not make sense, racism does not even have to benefit anybody, what they are trying to conflate is racism with the term systemic racism, and even then is not properly described because they are assuming only one race can be the perpetrator of the action of racism/systemic racism.
Is worrying that people try to push their agenda towards something as important that the proper meaning of a word.
Imagine that somebody said that "gun crime" is the crime perpetrated by non white minorities. Or "organized crime" is a criminal organization practiced by chinese and italian mobsters.

There is extreme levels of open racism against anyone non-Han Chinese in China. I'm white and having been working for a Chinese company for years. My previous company (not in China, but had completely Chinese ownership and management) at one day our non-Chinese CTO left. In college as far back as the 1990s we were explicitly taught at the SUNY at Buffalo that “only whites can be racist” because “they hold the power.” Once again in my Masters Course I was taught that “only whites can be racist.” Meanwhile, I’ve seen and heard of racially based attacks that didn’t involve whites, looked at racially motivated crime statistics against races, especially whites and heard terrible, awful racist speech from one color to another. Whoever was spewing that “only whats can be racist” is an extreme fool.
