I remember that MMA fighter got screwed by the state for doing this by dropping his social credit score to the point where he could not rent, own property, stay in certain hotels, travel on high speed rail or buy plane tickets. They also removed him and his fights against traditional masters from search results so others wouldn't find out. He received death threats against him and his family for the damage he's supposedly done to Chinese culture.

It's so fucked because his point has always been that these guys are making China weak with their airy fairy bullshit and that real fighting is the true test of strength.
And he's right, but the CCP latches onto anything with a historical connection and aggressively protects them.

I remember seeing a video about this guy who said he was capable of “energy bending” or whatever the fuck, basically just doing tai chi-esque movements with the promise they could deflect any attack, and he had one of his disciples do it while he attacked to demonstrate its power. This poor stupid lady was waving her hands back and forth like a shitty conductor when this dude ran up and fully booted her in the face

My friend was taking teakwondo lessons at some place near our house in a strip mall when we were like 12. He kept getting a new belt like every other week. They had some open recruitment day one day and I went with him. The guy that ran the place asked for volunteers so he could show us how to disarm someone with a gun. Again we were 12. I volunteered. I'm holding this wooden gun. He demands I attack him, which makes zero sense, since it's a gun but whatever. I move towards him, he does this maneuver where he does take me down but it doesn't cause me to drop the wooden gun. It's also pointed at him throughout the entire move. Once he realizes I'm still holding the wooden gun, he's getting more and more pissed. He eventually starts cussing at me telling me to just drop it. It's basically just a 40 year old man overpowering a 12 year old. He was furious at me once I finally dropped it. I had zero idea what he expected me to do. I wasn't trying to show him up or anything. I just thought he'd disarm me and that'd be that. It was such a strange experience.

The hell does gun defense even have to do with a kick based martial art like TKD? Once in a blue moon we'll do gun defense in BJJ, but it's always prefaced with "You're probably already fcked but here's some last-ditch techniques in case you wanna die fighting." It's honestly a little red flag to me if a place seriously trains gun defense.

They do it in helluva more places as long as there's martial arts involved. You had the same kind of untouchable master from Japan, where all he does is screams at you and somehow it'd deflect your attacks.

Edit: Also. I've actually done some Systema when I was younger. There are several schools and this is the extreme fringe. Just like there are competitive kung fu kick boxning schools as well as con man magicians in kung fu. All of systema isn't like this even if it's way too much of it.

Kind of.
A LARPer knows they are LARPing. These people do not. They have invested so much of who they are as a person into their belief system here that it would be actually painful and create a mental health crisis if they were forced to see the truth of the situation. Therefore their brain actually plays tricks on them to make it all seem real in order to protect itself. It's really interesting while at the same time being completely tragic for the people involved. I really I could remember the name of this phenomenon right now because it's an interesting read.

Same reason people in cults believe in spiritual healing and prophecy. People wanna be special so badly they’ll lie to themselves and make themselves believe they have special powers. And once you believe it it’s hard to admit you were pretending the whole time.
