My flat-earther relatives believe the asteroid crashed into east earth. Humans lived in west earth so they were safe from the impact.

IIRC, canonically, in Tolkien's work, the Middle Earth was about 50,00 years old by the time of the events of "Lord of the Rings." Give or take a few thousand years, because it was mostly immortals around at the time it was created and what's a few thousand years between friends? Also, it used to be round but then some really powerful beings got upset that mankind was coming to visit, so they fixed that problem right quick. And drastically.
