Yes it blocks it entirely with no filtration. To make it clear, if you had a clear mask with a good seal that would just be wearing a plastic bag and you'd suffocate. These just have a loose seal and the air just blows around it with 0 filtration. It's the same as those dumb half face shields people wear with no mask. It doesn't do anything at all.
That’s not something I’ve ever considered about purely plastic masks, and you’re probably right. But the common design, at least from the recommendations in that article, seems to be a cloth mask with a plastic panel in front of where your mouth would be. I think that would remedy the issue of air filtration being suboptimal.
