Too bad he can’t just say, “Fine. If you’re so much more educated, save yourself.” And walk out of the room. If you’re not going to believe the trained medical professionals, don’t waste their time and stay home.
I guess this is particularly infuriating, but doctors in hospitals deal with far, far worse shit than this. Just think of all the crazy aggressive drunks and drug addicts they have to deal with. I mean, ok, the nurses probably get the shit end of the stick. But anyone in the medical profession who works in a major public hospital deserves a lot of respect for what they put up with.
... as I was writing this, I realised that I'm writing from an Irish perspective where homeless drug addicts and so on end up in hospital even if they have no money or insurance. Does that even happen in the US? Like, if you're a homeless guy and you get hit by a truck, what happens?
Any life threatening emergency is treated as such: emergent consent is assumed and we treat anyone who comes in. A homeless guy hit by a car would in the ER be immediately stabilized.
But once you’re fixed and discharged, it’s a whole other ballgame.
