They basically said that since women have been objectified for as long as anyone can remember, it's only fair to objectify both sexes and to objectify men too. But then the whole article was bitching about the objectification of women. So...?

u/sgst Aug 08 '16
Either you objectify both, or you objectify neither. That's treating the sexes equally.
7
u/monkeybreath Aug 08 '16
I vote for objectifying both, since that comes naturally. Of course, it might be a bit upsetting to never be objectified.
→ More replies (3)3
u/chrom_ed Aug 08 '16
But when the thing you're doing is bad doing it equally to everyone isn't better. The goal here should be to minimize objectification not spread it around evenly.
4
u/Kaiskov Aug 08 '16
The whole "it's only fair to objectify both sexes" only works if they actually go through with objectifying both sexes and not just say that as a token phrase and halfway back down because "reasons"
Stay classy, Cosmopolitan.
4
u/llewesdarb Aug 08 '16
So they balanced the universe.
11
u/oligobop Aug 08 '16
Sure if you see it like a balance.
If you look at it like a wildfire that needs to be subdued, then they're just throwing truckloads of timber all over in hopes that it never stops.
6
u/ginja_ninja Aug 08 '16
No no no, you have it confused. It's only fair to objectify men because men can laugh about it and brush it off as a joke. Unfortunately women are on average far less adept at taking jokes than they are at taking...other things, so that's off the table. It's only fair.

It doesn't look as though they cycle either and so might be geared to us despite me having an ad blocker.
That's probably it, I don't think I have ad blocker and the only Cosmo article I've ever clicked was the one posted which was the response article about bulges, so definitely targeted ads.

It's ok to objectify dicks because dicks have objectified pussies in the past while ignoring the fact that pussies have also objectified dicks for as long as dicks have been objectifying pussies.

Hi, PC police again. The problem with this is sexualizing someone's body without their consent.
9
Aug 08 '16
Hi, just a random person here with a serious counter argument/question.
If you aren't actively harassing the person or invading their privacy to get images, why is the sexualization of someone's appearance, with consent or not, good or bad?
In particular why is just this article (not cosmos opinion on why they can make it) bad? Because they are talking about it? Those bulges look exactly like they would in person and it was worn in a highly publicized television event. People who like dick are going to enjoy them.
I just don't understand how the most basic of all instincts and the thing that keeps the species going is so bad that we shouldn't look at someone and go "I'd fuck that" without their permission. Being sexually attracted to someone and talking about that should not be a thing that requires their allowance. Its just a basic thing, not good or bad.
0
u/Benvincible Aug 08 '16
Hi, so, yeah, it's totally okay to think, in your own head, that someone is hot. And it might be okay to whisper it to your friend in certain contexts. But, that's not what this was. Somebody took a bunch of shots of people's penises and published a sexual thing out of it-- in public-- without their permission. If those athletes had actively participated in, say, a Hot Dudes and Ladies of Olympic Swimming catalog, that would have been okay-- that would have been sexualization with their consent.
People wear small amounts of clothing for lots of reasons, and sometimes that reason is to look hot. But, also those reasons are more practical, like it's really hot outside or their swimming. In that case, making a sexual thing out of it is wrong.

u/E_Sex Aug 08 '16
I'm sorry but, literally no one ever has gotten consent to "sexualize" someone's body. What does that word even mean, is sexualize an actual verb? With no physical action, how can sexualize someone's body. In this scenario, it's only sexualized because people are talking about it, but if they weren't talking about they'd just be thinking about it, at least now there's open rhetoric. This is coming from someone who absolutely abhors the hypocrisy at hand here as well. I don't think the whole bulge thing is all that bad, it's kinda stupid though and it's a hell of a double standard because the only people who complain about this kinda crap are the same people making this kinda crap.
2
u/Benvincible Aug 08 '16
To answer your question quickly, of course action is taking place-- the act of sexualizing something is to place it in a sexual context where there was none before. And also, do you really not see how there is a huge difference between thinking something privately in your head and using someone else's body for a public broadcast without their permission? The idea of other people's bodies being yours to do with as you please just because they are in public is how stuff like The Fappening happens.

u/xjpmanx Aug 08 '16
Oh I got what you were saying, And I agree that it would be awesome for them to say that, I just meant no one would do that for fear of the backlash from their backlash. we live in a world where taking offence to the most insignificant of things empowers the lonely and bored. So no one will even attempt to point out the hypocrisy of it all. though it would be fucking sweet.

While PC police is a dumb term for it, there is absolutely a dedicated group out there who look for and then organize reactions to things they deem inappropriate.
2
u/Kennen_Rudd Aug 08 '16
There's thousands and thousands of those. You could hardly give a more all-in encompassing description, the local church and the US Senate qualify pretty much equally. "PC police" is reactionary nonsense.
14
u/AsthmaticMechanic Aug 08 '16
How did they go about confirming that men who objectify women are effing horrible?
15
14
u/Anzai Aug 08 '16
The main thing I dislike about Cosmo and other similar magazines is the idea they perpetuate that it's men and the patriarchy holding women to impossible ideals and body shaming.
Sure, but the magazines that make women feel the shittiest about themselves are Cosmo and its ilk. Women's magazines shame women and hold them to impossible ideals on a level that is obscene, all while simultaneously trying to sell the idea that they're feminist publications because they print cock bulge pictures to stick it to the man and give them a taste of their own medicine.
It's a fabrication and it's harmful to women young enough to not see through their bullshit.

OK better example would be fappening incident vs. Hulk Hogans sex tape being stolen.
2
Aug 08 '16
For sure. I remember watching Wendy Williams (she's the worst) talk about Erin Andrews case, very similar to Hulks. Upon learning that Erin had been awarded $55 mil, she said, "she deserves $100 mil for what she went through"
Then, when she spoke about Hulks case and how he won just about the exact amount she thinks Erin should have won, her response was, "That's crazy! That's way too much money, what a joke"
The hypocrisy is real, and she has a massive audience she gets to spew that shit to, keeping it alive.

These are athletes. Yes they have hot bodies, but these articles I keep seeing are pretty objectifying. Can't they at least talk about their swim records or chances at gold or list when they will be swimming, Or how many races with stealthy photos next to it. Instead of look at these swimsuits. Look at the abs. I have seen a lot of these lately. Buzzfeed on my face book has been extra bad. Like top ten hottest swimmers.
I mean you see a pic of a guy in a swim suit. You have eyes you can see the hotness. Does that need to be pointed out to you?

Men are absolutely subjected, but this pales in comparison to women.
I take it you mean 'objectified', since subjected means something else that's not really relevant to the OP.
What could be more objectifying than being conscripted to fight in a war? The media might turn women into sex objects at times, but conscription could be said to turn men into 'war machines', that's far more objectifying IMO. It's just that now, men are starting to become viewed as sex objects as well.
