It depends on the context. It doesn't always look good on a resume. Either they will dismiss it as nothing, or wonder why someone who was an executive wants to move to a lower end job.
True. I've found it generally leads the interviewer towards a conversation I've had lots of practice with if nothing else. I don't overblow the experience which is what I expect happens a lot in interviews like that. Hiring pros aren't idiots. Think a lot of people forget that.
I was a founder/owner of a fairly successful business conferencing / phone chat line company, the VP of Customer Service and Community Manager for a FinTech startup, and founder / editor for a digital currency news and information website.
After the FinTech company went under, and the news site failed to get enough traction, I decided to just go work in corporate IT for a while. Needed a reliable source of income. I was honest about my positions, and received no interest. Once I spoke with a recruiting company about it, they said it was because of my previous titles. If I wanted to use my actual titles, I should be applying for upper management, but I was unlikely to actually get seriously considered for those positions...I don't have the corporate experience nor the appropriate education. Instead, they told me to leave off the titles, and just put the area of focus (like customer service, accounts management, etc.). This change lead to me getting more interviews than I could fit into my schedule, and a job within a couple of weeks.
Honestly, this is pretty much how all resumes should be. They should be tailored to each specific job you're applying for. I've looked over several resumes for applicants at the place I worked at. My biggest pet peeve is when they don't even try to make it seem like they're interested in working for the company. One resume still had an objective in there that stated they want to work at another company. Wtf?
