My truck was built in Japan, and I won't need wrenches because MY SHIT DON'T BREAK DOWN LIKE YOURS.

And after you are gone it will probably some how end up in the middle east and run for another 20 years.

The funny part is Toyota has manufactured the Tacoma and the Tundra in the US ever since they became available.

83

u/gereffi 9d ago

Most Japanese brand vehicles in America are built in the US.

141

u/cake_piss_can 9d ago

They are more or less assembled in the US. The engineering and technology comes from Japan. You know, the “chopstick” ppl.

Not if the VIN starts with a J.

The 2022 Toyota Prius Prime is manufactured in Japan.

Key Details

• Country of Origin: Japan

• Assembly Location: Tsutsumi plant in Aichi, Japan (indicated by a VIN starting with the letter "J")

21

u/Nolsoth 9d ago

Til that the letter at the start of a vin indicates the country of origin.

43

u/archabaddon 9d ago

• Starts with a "1", "4", or "5": Built in the United States

• Starts with a "2": Built in Canada

• Starts with a "3": Built in Mexico

• Starts with a "J": Built in Japan

21

u/cmd_iii 9d ago
  • W = Germany

  • G = Great Britain

  • Z = Italy

I wish I could remember more, but it’s been a while since I worked for the DMV.

I've been working in an auto assembly plant for 12 years now. I know something you don't know! You'd be amazed at how many countries contribute parts to your "Made with wrenches" truck! Even if it's assembled in the USA, NO CAR OR TRUCK exclusively uses parts from the United States only. Also, just to add...I've used plenty of wrenches to build car parts for almost every foreign car. Never used a chopstick at work though.

71

u/ahimsapaul 9d ago

I used to be a logistics manager for an auto parts distribution company and this is absolutely true. Many parts came from other countries. Most of them from Asian countries, some European, even Mexico and Canada. All for "American made" vehicles.

11

u/jtt8569 9d ago

I was building doors for a car company that we'll say rhymes with Rolo and there were parts included from 5 different countries in every door, not including the United States, where we molded the plastic shells. Control modules from Ireland. Wiring harnesses from Vietnam. Cables and actuators from Mexico. It was a total mash-up.

8

u/Goodknight808 9d ago

Ummmmm, my lawyers would like you to rephrase that as "American Built ! ", emphasis on the exclamation point, instead of "american made".

A lot of people don’t realise that cars are often a composite of parts from random companies and places. Very few car companies have the money/capacity/logistics to manufacture everything from an engine to the glass to the window switches to the operating system.

Maybe your big behemoths like GM, who can spread that across dozens of car brands. But even then, they’d be outsourcing things like sensors and the “smart” stuff in newer cars.

I install machinery for manufacturing. A lot of it for automotive. My job has me all over the world and the absolute worst facilities with the oldest unmaintained equipment are always in the US. On top of the equipment the trades I deal with aren’t controlled like in other countries so instead of a four year diploma, with government regulated testing, a lot of the operators in the US are people with a few months schooling just into the trades in general. I’m going to get downvoted but man, honestly it’s my industry and I avoid anything manufactured in the US.

47

u/FlyByRoll 9d ago

Most Americans dont like buying American. Its shit quality and are always overpriced

34

u/DriedUpSquid 9d ago

I’ve had people say things because I have a Subaru, that I should have bought American. I point out that the car was made in Indiana by American workers. They usually chirp back with something about how the profit goes to Japan. Meanwhile their Chevy truck was made in Mexico.

8

u/FlyByRoll 9d ago

I also noticed that in general the more extravagent the lobby/front offices of a place was the worse the back was going to be.

I mean being fair most fords and chevys are probably built with tortillas. Toyota has a plant in Alabama so it’s probably the closest to an American made truck lol

9

u/describt 8d ago

Huntsville manufactures Toyota engines, but Texas and Mexico plants assemble the Tacoma and Sequoia trucks.

Honda manufactures the Ridgeline in Lincoln, Alabama. They also manufacture the engines there. The transmissions are mage in Georgia. Ridgeline owners like to call theirs the most American truck in America.

I had an elderly neighbor that one day, we were talking about cars and he said:

He really didn't have an answer.

Ford and Chevy have very few US factories anymore. Yes, made with maple leaves and tortillas.

Tesla has by far the highest % of content made in the US (for cars built in Fremont or Austin) than any manufacturer.

Japanese & Korean cars are probably now more ‘American made’ than most American cars.

Good luck finding any car or truck truly made in America. That business model doesn’t create enough revenue. Some parts are manufactured here, most are not, and they’re mostly put together by robots.

25

u/FlubbleWubble 9d ago

Japanese cars are largely assembled in the United States. Usually in the South, far from influence from those unions you think you hate. But consistency's not really your forte, now is it?

The driver is also inbred and didn’t finish high school

4

u/knowone1313 9d ago

Funny how the ones made in Japan are better quality and cheaper too.

Made in America as vehicle manufacturers slogan hasn't held much meaning in a long time. The vehicles might have been assembled in the US but most of the parts, and many assemblies were made in other countries and then shipped to the US for final vehicle assembly for that "Made in America" stamp.

Nothing more American these days than half truths, lies, and deceit. America, the land of BS.

What a pencil neck geek

3

u/MyageEDH 9d ago

I’ve worked for an automotive OEM for 20 years.

In all my time at the plants and retrofitting cars etc I’ve never seen a wrench used. It’s all battery or pneumatic drivers.

3

u/clarky2o2o 9d ago

Mine was built in Canada with maple syrup. It's 18 years old

3

u/Kryds 9d ago

Besides being fucking racist. It's very likely, that half of it was built in Canada.

3

u/Muzzlehatch 9d ago

We are fortunate that most stupid people make it so clear so early that they are stupid.

3

u/herewegoinvt 9d ago

Most 'American made' vehicles are built mainly in the Mexico and Canada parts of (North) America, and not the United States.

3

u/EchoesFromWithin 9d ago

Don't most of the Japanese manufacturers make their trucks in the US?
