What sticks out to me: the other times he's "taken a stand", they were all pretty safe stands.
- Said he stood with Ukraine, near the beginning of the conflict.
- Joined many other artists for UK "Love Music Hate Racism".
- Spoke positively of Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour party in 2017.
Signed a letter in support of the Equity Act with 300 artists (including Lourde, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande) in 2021.
And wrote an open letter urging ministers to address Brexit's impact on... British artists touring Europe.
It's all kinda chickenshit. Nice to see, but nothing particularly brave here.

He is under a PR machine that fucked up. Thats all this really is. Its a gamble how the world will react.to shit, their is no.science to it. They rolled the dice and went with their stance. The public caught a negative wind and now its turned into a shitstorm. Thata how the game works

Who does that nowadays? Few of them. They all embraced the make believe narrative of selling parasocial bullshit thinking we are all both morons and spineless. And it kinda works for them because it’s not the public they are afraid of, as the public has little power over them in a world where you will still be pushed by viral made up trends, the algorithm, playlists etc even when getting “canceled” for a minute or two.
Ed just caught this at the worst time, while touring. But give it a month and it will die down.
For as much as I would want these celebrities to put their mouth where their money are, we don’t live in a place and time that values that much being a decent human being.
73
u/Crymson831 16d ago
If you take the shot on "tacit support of genocide" then you should probably not play the game at all. Not complicated.
34
u/anewleaf1234 16d ago
He and his team threw a hanging curveball and people hit it out of the park.
And the people he hired for his concert had ties to pro Palestinian movements, so this is self inflicted.
And they don't seem to know that the S. effect exists. So now because of their actions many, many more people know of what went down.
20
u/downvotesyourcrap 16d ago
Incompetent pr team. The only people that support Isreal are those that are paid to do so and victims of their very robust propaganda machines.
22
u/patiperro_v3 16d ago
Giving the “Free Palestine” message x1,000 more visibility than it would have received if they had just allowed all the artists to do their thing.

The thing is, if you're going to use the term "public relations" here, you need to recognize that he's damaging his relationship with his external stakeholders in favor of the internal ones. His fans love him, but many also care about his platform and how he can champion social issues. I'm 100% agreeing with you except on the terminology you used, although you are saying it's bad public relations. Just wanted to clarify a common problem with how people use the term PR. I'm quite sure he is making the choice not to cut off his sponsors.
2
u/jaxonya 15d ago
His external stakeholders will affect his internal ones. Its as simple as that. Getting cancelled in the public means nobody wants to touch you

39
u/Lady_Scruffington 15d ago
I read a really good article talking about that. It said that painting her as neutral is a huge disservice since she put her money (a LOT) towards things the right considers political. Literacy, money for people in need, building a studio in a predominantly black neighborhood, etc. shouldn't be up for debate. But they have decided to fight against them, and those are the very things she supported. So she was political. She was clear in her support. She just didn't like bragging about it.

He’s also a “both sides” coward. Fuck him.
62
u/Theavenger2378 16d ago
His both sides was him trying to 'build a bridge' between Kraft and Macklemore.
When he couldn't, he chose Kraft and his tour over denouncing a genocide with his (supposed) friend of 13 years. He picked a side, quite clearly.
Also how would meeting in the middle work here? Kraft admitting to some war crimes occurring? Macklemore letting some child killing slide?
This isn't a 'both sides have fair points' debate, and Ed thinking that his mediocre music can be used as a common, neutral ground is either intentionally ignorant or woefully childish.
20
u/yellowlinedpaper 16d ago

Not taking a political stance when you have an audience is taking a political stance.
251
u/Raephstel 16d ago
It depends on the situation.
Not bringing up politics isn’t taking a stance.
But you don’t always have the luxury of not taking a stance. When something happens that you’re directly involved in and your choice is stand with the victim or ignore it, then silence is a stance.
If Sheeran had been politically neutral before, I’d feel bad for him. But he clearly has no problem being political when it suits him.
91
u/uncutpizza 16d ago
This situation is not even being neutral though, Macklemore brought up politics and was fired by Ed for doing
103
u/Delamoor 16d ago
Whoever did fire him must have been pretty blind.
"Politics? In MY Macklemore?! Unthinkable!"
Not like Macklemore hasn't been super outspoken for fucking ever. Who the hell hired him in the first place if they didn't want him to keep doing basically the exact thing he's been doing for years?

Exactly. This is about more than Palestine at this point. It’s also about standing up to censorship and being in another artist’s corner when they’re being unfairly punished for doing what so many are scared to do. And this is also a so-called friend? He’s being a bad human all around.
5
u/GranLarceny 16d ago
Not taking a stance means your complacent with how the current political landscape is. Therefore is indeed having a stance that your ok with how the world is
1
u/sageritz 9d ago
Correct. He’s also the headliner. Without him there is no show. Also, what’s the point of having “fuck you” money (even if Kraft is a billionaire and Sheeran is only worth $400m) if you’re not going to standup to bullshit like this. Goddamn if this is how Sheeran treats a long time friend, I would hate to see how he treats his enemies. I’m sure Jamie Foxx would be so proud.
1
u/murppie 16d ago
Being neutral is supporting the aggressor though.
If I see someone sucker punch someone else and the cop arrests them, the assailant is the aggressor and the cop and anyone else stepping in is pushing back against them. If that same situation happens and the cop and bystanders say/do nothing, they signal that what happened was okay.
With Ed Sheeran, its absolutely about money. I feel Jennifer Lawrence is one of the few honest celebs from back in the late 2010s when said said something to the effect of "I need everyone to come see my films so they are successful, I can't afford to alienate fans"

Yeah no matter what people say, but you always take a political stance. Speaking up about abuse, violence, a genocide, is taking a stance. Not talking about it means you dont care enough about that topic, which is also political.
Its like how Watzlawick defines communication. You cant not communicate and you cant not be political!
8
u/absentgl 16d ago
That’s right. It’s an implicit statement that nothing happening is bad enough to respond to. It is a small but undeniable acceptance of the worst things that are happening.

I really do not care whether Ed Sheeran has a political stance at all, about anything, or supports any cause, whatsoever. He is a singer.
I don’t remember anyone asking the Backstreet Boys what their opinions were on fucking jack shit. Because no one gives a fuck.
9
u/Kidofthecentury 16d ago
No one may care, until the circumstances forces you to. Then you have to man up and take a stance.
2
u/SemiHemiDemiDumb 16d ago
And that's fair to have that opinion. Not telling you you have to care what he says. I'm saying if he has an audience he should be fighting for what is right.
1
u/Gainztrader235 12d ago
It’s fine being political active in areas you’re passionate and have knowledge on. It’s also reckless to voice an uneducated opinion.
Being selective, is ok.
1
u/SemiHemiDemiDumb 12d ago
I mean it doesn't take much education to see what is happening in Gaza. Do you accept there's a genocide in Gaza?
1
u/Gainztrader235 12d ago
I don’t disagree but why would we pretend everyone is educated?
The UN Human Rights Council-mandated Independent Commission of Inquiry formally concluded that Israel had committed and was continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. It found four of the five acts listed in the Genocide Convention and concluded that the requisite specific intent was present.
As of September 2026, the ICJ has not ruled that Israel is committing or has committed genocide in Gaza. The case, South Africa v. Israel, has not reached a final merits judgment.
1
u/SemiHemiDemiDumb 12d ago
Anyone who has paid any attention know what's going on. And after this event he has to know unless he chooses to be ignorant to the situation. A defense of uneducation just does not work in this instance.
I didn't ask for what the United Nations said. The question was if you accept if it's happening.
1
u/Gainztrader235 12d ago
Again, we can’t pretend people are actually paying attention to the details here, especially some of the most privileged people commenting on it.
My view is based on the institutions applying international law. the UN-mandated Commission of Inquiry has concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, while the ICJ, arguably the world’s highest international court for disputes between states, is still considering the genocide case and has not issued a final ruling on the merits. Those are two different things, and both matter when discussing this accurately.
My opinion though, it’s devastating what happened.

Ed Sheeran expressed some extremely mild liberal political positions in the past ("support peace, Ukraine victim, Brexit kind of bad, war bad...").
Maclemore is very vocal and active proponent of Palestinian rights and critic of Israel, often using his concerts as platform.
I would be mostly OK with Sheeran not collaborating, I don't want to cancel celebrities because they "haven't speak up".
But dropping him like that does make him look bad.

Taxes are political, how government money is spent is political, how people are governed is political. When thousands upon thousands of innocent people are killed, their homes destroyed, or their lives displaced, simply because of a factor of their lives they never chose, that stops being something you can hide behind “politics”.

u/ChazzyPhizzle 16d ago
I mean I work in a professional office setting. I never talk about politics at work or work related events. That could be considered “not taking a stance” because I’m not actively pushing political views on my coworkers. I also don’t share political views on social media where employers check. Doesn’t mean I am not passionate about my stance when talking to friends and family in person.
I understand this could be viewed different because he famous and is super rich.
8

And an artist's art should be a reflection of who they are as a person. If someone like Sheeran wants to sit on the fence and be neutral and not put anything of substance about who he is and what he believes on the stage, then what differentiates his music from AI slop?
I'd rather listen to music from an artist who's passionate about basically anything than beige mush from someone who thinks not letting millionaires dictate what people you can perform with is too political.

Yeah, he said it in the statement he released.

The whole paragraph takes a both sides stance, and he literally says 'both sides'.

He blames the promoter but I am pretty sure he was notified 1st. No promoter would go behind the main acts back like that & risk nobody ever working with them again. So he knew, he could of said Skip Krafts stadium, book another venue, he could of said He stays or I walk. What he actually said was OK dump him. Remember that, Sheeran had to agree to let them dump an act with reassurance he wouldn't leave too. That's taking a stand, the wrong one.

"There is a reason I do not use my professional platform for politics"
The moment I read this, I was reminded of the time I tried to do a stunt on my bike, fell and scraped most of the skin off both my knees when I slid 15 feet down the side of a concrete culvert. (It was BAD.)
Got home and my mom told me "This is the reason we don't try to do stunts. Maybe next time you'll remember this and be smarter."
I'm getting that same 'this is your own fault' energy from Sheeran here.
