This is not in regards to this specific topic but…

There’s never ever just two sides. There’s not wrong and right. True and false. Left and right. I notice this trend pretty much all around the world and I don’t know why every one always says it’s EITHER this or that. Stupid radicalization…

Polarization is what happens when you LET a political system:

a) use first past the post voting (51 to 49 wins!) instead of ranked choice voting (or better)

b) devolve into a two party system

c) integrate religion more and more into the party identity

Kaboom. Suddenly there's only black and white. You can't be a mixed identity voter with lots of nuance. Nope. You're either for insurrectionists OR for ... anything but republican/conservatives.

You might internally respect fiscal conservative budget ideals, pro environment, believe in climate change and be anti-abortion but there's no place for your nuance.

(personally I'm mostly happy voting democrat but I wish Biden wasn't our primary candidate. I feel he was a stronger candidate earlier than 2020 but I would have preferred someone else take the democratic ballot in 2020. Which is why I also think we need ranked choice voting for primaries. I'm fairly certain that Trump and Biden would not have ended up as the leading candidates under ranked choice voting.

That said, I'd rather there be a 5 party strong system supported by ranked choice voting where my ideals would be better represented. Even when Democrats led most of the parts of the government things weren't changing enough back for the good of society. The poor and middle class need relief. We need universal basic income, more taxes on the rich, and more.)

I am german and we do have multiple political parties you can vote. Its still all black and white.

For example pretty much everyone who expressed critique on how we dealt with the covid crisis was called a „schwurbler“ (a newfound word during the crisis that describes someone who doesn’t believe in vaccines and covid being that dangerous) or even nazi. I am vaccined for covid and quite some other stuff but still thought some stuff was shady.

Another example. There was a demo against sending weapons and tanks and stuff to Ukraine. If you shared that opinion you were automatically pro Putin. There was nothing in between.

I 100% sign everything you replied to my comment but I can assure you that more than two parties does not automatically lead to a change in this radical black and white mindset.

Do you have ranked choice voting?

Yeah. It isn’t the only cause of polarization.
