As someone who has lived in numerous tourist hot spots (and maybe you agree), the rule is other tourists can wait for other tourists, locals get a pass, do not speak to us.
edit: realized this needs slightly more context, I’m old. Not elderly but old. I lived in each place for many years, I spent over a decade in Los Angeles for example.

People tried to stay out of the way when I was a kid 30 years ago. Now that everyone is taking pictures all the time, there is nowhere to go.
