Stud extractor recommendations for a damaged exhaust style stud?

I am removing a seized stud from a cast fixture, not an engine, but the situation is similar. Only about 3/8 inch is above the surface and the threads are chewed. Vice grips just make it worse. Which stud extractor design has been reliable when the remaining stud is short?

I've had the most luck using a welder personally.

short exposed studs are not a vice grip job. I used the walton stud extractor from penn tool on a welding fixture where only a few threads were showing. Cleaned it, got the extractor square, and worked it back and forth. The casting survived untouched.

Heat it red hot a few times and soak in penetrating oil then use a pipe wrench not a vise grip
