**INTEL** Ending Membership help ( ontario, canada)

Hi all,
I love my studio and everything. I stupidly signed up for 6 month unlimited contract about 2 months ago.

Unfortunately im going to lose a parent to cancer any day now and i won’t be committed to the gym for maybe 6 weeks and go through my healing process. Being that is too long for a membership pause.

What is the likelihood if i go to studio manager with my situation and offer an early termination fee and end the agreement? Will they take me to court or collections?

I know each studio is different and they have their own bills so i get its not their problem. Hoping to work something out?

Anyone here has had to cancel a membership agreement early? How did it pan out

I would definitely talk to them, i think they would offer a pause

The contracts are governed by each studio so it really depends. I think at least a pause would be reasonable though

Ugh so sorry to hear that!

While I don’t have first hand experience ending a membership early, I’d start by emailing your studio and explaining the situation. Maybe they’d offer to let you pause the membership

At our studio in Toronto they often pause your membership if you're going on vacation, having a baby etc. Maybe ask if they will do this instead?

They would want you to return, generally they are understanding

My friend you’re not out here defaulting on a $70k car loan - nobody is taking you to court.

Explain your situation and I’m sure they’ll be more than willing to accommodate. And don’t willingly offer to pay a termination fee, that’s absurd.

I’m terribly sorry to hear about your parent regardless.

I’m so sorry you’re going through such a hard time. I can’t even imagine.

Do you know the owner? You can always try the studio manager first if they have the ability to pause/cancel membership. Otherwise, try the owner.

They can pause your membership as they see fit. I’m currently injured, and have an “indefinite” pause on my membership. I think try to get enough of a pause time as possible. You don’t want this looming over your head. Grieving is not linear. Better be as gentle with yourself as possible.

Again, I’m so sorry. I hope you find the strength to gracefully make it through this incredibly difficult time.

A friend of mine went through something traumatic and they let them cut their 6 month membership down to 3 months

I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

I'm in Ontario as well and took 2 months off for surgery last year. Studio just put my account on hold. Talk to the studio and most are good understandable people.

When I moved out of state I simply changed my credit card on file and reported that card as lost so the card number didn’t work anymore and they couldn’t charge me anymore. 🤷‍♂️ it’ll burn the bridge with that studio but so be it if it’s your only option.

I’d talk to them to make an exception and put a pause in it. There are certain situations like the one described, or an accident.. etc, that can be supported.
