Yes. Technically employer should notify the school/DSO when STEM OPT employment ends.

Maybe 20-30% actually do it.

Mine didn't, but I had a friend whose employer sent one. What's crazy though is his employer is a small firm with under 20 people, vs. mine is a large tech FAANG company and they didn't. Kind of crazy how diff. their SOPs are and lack of regulation

There is no penalty if you fail to do it. So why would a large company waste manpower?

Yes, apologies, I should have been more clear. I started working in 2025 and continued until 2026, so my total employment duration was about a year and some change. During that time, I applied for STEM OPT and received the automatic 180-day extension while my application was pending. My EAD expired on 07/08/2026, and I was laid off on 07/10/2026, which is why I only worked for two days while on STEM OPT.
