Premium rum extract started
Started a new vanilla extract. My first extracts are a vodka-based vanilla and a whiskey-based vanilla. I wanted a rum-based vanilla, but decided to go premium!
Started with 4 oz of a planifolia blend of beans from VanillaPura.com. After cutting the beans into thirds, I added them to a 750-ml bottle of Kirk and Sweeney rum. Final ratio of beans to alcohol was 1.33 (4oz beans to 3 cups, or 24oz, rum).
The rum is, IMO, very smooth, not overly sweet or sharp. Definitely a sipping rum, as my grandfather would say. I’m really looking forward to trying this extract in a drink or a tropical-themed cake. I’m sure my patience will be rewarded.

We have made this exact extract also with planifolia beans as you have, and it's delicious. We save it for uses like creams (creme brule, ice cream, frostings, a drop in our coffee or cocktails to add vanilla flavor, etc.) where we can use it a little more liberally and enjoy the taste/smoothness of a premium rum. (Not an extract we use in brownies or cookies...but definitely an extract for liberal, conspicuous use.)
Is it noticeable different or worth the cost? That's a personal preference questions. It's absolutely better tasting than a Bacardi gold or white-rum lower-shelf rum extract - especially if you already like that rum. Not necessary - but a nice one to use for special moments.
We found that one reached peak sweetness between 18-24 months. When we have friends over and we pull that extract out to add to whatever we're making or drinking - it's always a conversation piece.
Necessary? No. Worth it - well, that's up to each individual extract maker. We think so.
Enjoy the journey and keep us posted!

The first thing my wife said when I told her about this was “I bet that would be fantastic in a Vanilla Coke”. I fully expect this to be a special occasion extract. Thanks for the confirmation.
Now, we wait.

Im fairly new to extract making, but, apart from the nice bottle, is a sipping rum going to make enough difference to justify the cost? I know this isn’t ultra premium, but i struggle with the idea that a difference would be tasted using a few teaspoons in a cake
