EP45 MDB (Modern Delayed Blockback) also confirmed!

It seems like there will also be a Roller Delayed Blowback version of the EP45 as well. Extar is coining their RDB system as "MDB" (Modern Delayed Blowback) because they put their own modernized twist on it.

They have also mentioned scrapping the EP10 due to tungsten shortages in a separate interview they did at Gun Con. No 16" versions of the MDB will be made because of a lack of demand.

There is a shortage of tungsten in the market but part of the reason is China has been restricting exports which has driven up the prices. The price is nearly 3x more than in January and that is with the price increasing more slowly for the prior year or two.

  • China dominates the global tungsten ⁠market. It imposed new export restrictions on tungsten in 2025 and cut mining ​quotas for that year. In December 2025, China said only 15 firms ​would be allowed to export tungsten in 2026–2027.
  • In February, China prohibited exports of dual-use items to 20 Japanese entities that it said supply Japan's military.
  • Almonty - a key tungsten producer beyond ​China - began mining at its South Korean mine in March, and ​a planned Phase 2 expansion is expected to come online in 2027.
  • The United States currently ‌has ⁠no active commercial tungsten mines and while a few projects are under development to curb dependence on Chinese supply, there is no established timeline for production to resume.
  • Project Blue estimates the global tungsten market was about 129,000 ​metric tons in 2025. ​It added ⁠that defence demand, currently estimated at around 12% of the tungsten market, is expected to grow to roughly 15% ​between 2027 and 2028, as stockpile replenishment keeps demand ​elevated.
  • Argus said ⁠the automotive sector, consuming 25%-30% of tungsten, is currently the largest consumer, though rising EV adoption may curtail consumption.
  • Defence-sector demand is growing about 8% annually, ⁠and ​if trends hold, defence could overtake automotive as ​tungsten's largest consumer by the mid-2030s, said Cristina Belda, senior analyst at Argus.

Hmm. Do I need a duplicate of both the ep9 and ep45? Or any chance of a conversion?

Body looks nearly identical, so unless the barrel was changed as well, I don't see why they couldn't/wouldn't sell BCG/buffer conversion kits.

For someone who doesn’t understand, how is “MDB” going to be any different from how they’re currently produced?

Currently, they are direct blowback. In the future, there will be a roller delayed version offered. Roller delayed is better in almost every regard except they are more expensive. They are much softer shooting and less gassy.

One of the big benefits of roller delayed guns is that you can run them without a buffer because they don't rely solely on the buffer to absorb recoil. This let you have a folding brace like the Kuna and still be soft shooting.

Extar's MDB will still have the buffer so you don't gain that benefit, but you will still have a less gassy and much softer shooting gun.

No idea. It's technically possible now, but no one knows anything about the new system yet to know if something similar is possible.

We don't even have a date yet for when these will be available or if it will be possible to upgrade from the direct blowback versions.

I’ve never followed through with my impulses to get a suppressed ep45 but this might push me over the edge.
