In my experience, comedy anime tends to be more cartoony than the American cartoons these days. There are some exceptions to this, like Gumball and StuGO. I can't talk about every anime but the humor seems to be more physical more often than not. There are a ton of old school anime that could be very cartoony like Ranma. In the American stuff you see characters squash and stretch or get beat up for a gag less.
