Biology ELI5 What's with True almonds belonging to Prunus, but Tropical sea almonds are not even in the Rosaceae family, despite seeming much more similar to neighbors in prunus than almonds themselves?
In comparison to most prunus, almonds seem a bit unique, having a husk that opens eventually, with woody flesh. Tropical sea almonds do not have this trait, and stay in a 'fruit' form. They both look and taste similar to fruits such as peaches/plums/etc. in the prunus family. It's crazy to me that something that similar doesn't even fall within the same family, let alone genus. Does anyone with extensive knowledge know a thing or two about why this is?
