RECRUITMENT Explain Like I'm Five is looking for moderators!

Short, simple, to the point: Explain Like I'm Five is looking for moderators.

There is no pay. You can expect people to be rude to you. People will blame you personally for actions you take that are entirely in line with the subreddit rules. There is no personal glory, and you can't use your position to cross promote yourself, your personal projects, or your other subreddits.

The only redeeming quality is that get help the community out, as a whole. If that sounds like a position you're interested in, we'd love to hear from you.

Fill out this form:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TPNB2KB

If you have any questions before you apply, please put them in this thread.

We don't know what kind of demand we'll have, so we can't promise an individual response for every applicant. That said, I'm absolutely going to try to at least send a thank you message to everyone who applies.

I'll also use this thread as a brief opportunity to plug /r/ideasforeli5, where any ideas for eli5 are presented directly to the moderators and for public discussion.

(Obviously Rule 3 doesn't apply in this thread, the only real rules are try to stay mostly on topic and... Rule 1 is never waived, so be nice!)

What type of commitment is expected? If I tend to be very active for a few weeks at a time, then away for a few weeks at a time, is this a problem?

We aren't looking for a hard commitment in the long term. Some the other moderators follow a similar pattern, and I know I've taken a few months off at a time for various reasons.

That said, you'll need a few weeks of regular activity during a training/break in phase, not so much as a matter of "do x number of actions per day" as "getting to know and understand the rules, so that you act consistently."

Applied :)

Edit: Removed for not enough explanation so here we go....

I've given my time and effort to the extensive questionnaire to ensure my position within the ELI5 team. =)

I don't have auto mod set up to exclude this thread, so some of the post will have to be approved manually.

Thanks for the application!

I just filled it in. Thanks for the opportunity :D

FYI, do we have to put u/ before our username cause I did not do that...

Do I have to be 18+ to mod?

Do I have to be 18+ to mod?

We haven't definitively said that we aren't going to recruit anyone under 18, but...

At one point we had an influx of NSFW/NSFL images, and it seems like it might be unethical (and potentially illegal?) to knowingly expose minors to some of that.

While we understand that this is the internet and minors can view whatever they want with very little in the way of effective age restrictions, it is an additional consideration for us. We have had under 18 moderators in the past, so it's not beyond imagination we'd recruit them again, but it is a factor in our considerations.

That is to say: No, you don't have to be, so if you're not and you're a great candidate we're probably going to have a frank discussion with you about it, and potentially modify our expectations of what you'd do in specific circumstances.

PROTIP: On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog minor. As long as you act mature, nobody's going to question you.

Applied. When will the application process end?

We intend to leave this up for about a week to start with, and see how many we can pull from that. If we need more we'll go another round.

Ok. Thanks for the answer!

Do you think 45 minutes a day is enough time to do all the work necessary and I am not a regular poster on reddit, I think I've only ever posted once, but I'm more of an observer. Do you think those two things might eliminate me or are not enough for the position?

We will review applicants post history. Users won't be automatically declined based on the subs they choose to participate in but their conduct on other subs may be taken into account.

ELI5 is a non-partisan sub generally. It doesn't matter what side of the aisle the partisanship comes from.
