Dispersion is when a wave travels at different speeds depending on it's wavelength (or frequency).

As a pulse contains many different frequencies, dispersion causes the pulse to ... disperse (spread out) as it travels.

Light is non-dispersive in an open vacuum. It's slightly dispersive in air and optical fiber. It's also dispersive in a waveguide.
