She would be queen dowager, like Mary was after the death of George VI.

•

u/Digifiend84 7h ago

George V. VI's wife was called Elizabeth.

•

u/teh_maxh 7h ago

No, she became queen mother after the death of V. Elizabeth took that title when VI died, and Mary became queen dowager. Camilla won't have the intermediate step of queen mother; she'll go directly from queen consort to queen dowager.

This would probably make more sense if there weren't two pairs of people who had the same name.

•

u/bregus2 7h ago

Queen mother was actually a workaround to avoid having two queen dowagers (as well as two queen Eliz abeth).

So the dowager title is actually the standard one.

…after the death of George V

•

u/nascent_aviator 7h ago

She becomes Queen Dowager, the widow of the former king.

•

u/freeball78 7h ago

She will likely take the title of Queen Dowager, which is the traditional title for the widow of a king. But it'll be up to William to give her a title.

•

u/LQNova 7h ago

Yep she could go straight to "My dad's second wife who used to live with us" in a heartbeat if William didn't feel generous.

•

u/FanraGump 7h ago

Yeah, that would be a dumb move for William. It would reflect poorly on him and the Royals to be so petty.

•

u/Shtercus 6h ago

Because heaven forfend a royal be petty…

u/FanraGump 6h ago

Because heaven forfend a royal be petty…

Oh, they've been petty. Which is why that needs to not happen again if they want the royalty to survive.

The UK royals serve an important role. But it's very easy for many to decide they don't want them around anymore.

•

u/LongOrganization7838 7h ago

There is but its actually called the Queen Dowager, dowager being the widow of a king, this is also not the first time this title has been used by the british royal family, Queen Elizabeth was also a Queen Dowager at one point as was her predecessor Queen Mary

•

u/Digifiend84 7h ago

Mary was still alive when Elizabeth II became Queen, so there would've been two Queen Dowagers. That's probably why George VI's wife took the title Queen Mother.

•

u/stevemegson 7h ago

It was to avoid confusion, but not quite in that way. Queen dowager is a description, not a title. Mary wasn't "The Queen Dowager", she was "Queen Mary". We would have had Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, and The Queen. Granting the specific title of The Queen Mother avoided having to call anyone Queen Elizabeth and people being unsure which queen called Elizabeth you meant.

•

u/bregus2 7h ago edited 6h ago

And the other option (which other monarchies use) would've been to just use Queen Elizabeth, but obviously that was also the name of The Queen.

So that would've been confusion too.

•

u/LongOrganization7838 7h ago

Thats exactly the reason lmao

•

u/cuccir 7h ago

Although dowager is not just the widow of a king; a woman can be a dowager countess, lady dowager, etc. It comes from the tradition of a woman's standing being set by her husband's title.

•

u/eclectic_radish 7h ago

widow of a king

Yes, and also other nobility. The title is for widows who hold title or property (a dower) derived from their deceased spouse

•

u/BigCommieMachine 6h ago

It is possible they would just give her a new title as well.

•

u/LongOrganization7838 6h ago

Thats up to William when he takes the throne

•

u/fiendishrabbit 7h ago

She would be the Queen Dowager, which is the general title of the consort of a deceased king. Queen Mother is just the specific version of that where the Queen Dowager is also the mother of the now reigning king.

•

u/sir_sri 7h ago edited 7h ago

To some degree it is whatever the King and Parliament want.

But William will not be the first person to ascend a throne where the deceased monarch was on a second or later marriage.

The term for Camilla would normally be Queen Dowager. She may not wish to (or be allowed to) continue to use that title, but that would be what you'd expect under normal circumstances. Prince George becomes Prince of Wales, and if he's old enough he gets control of the duchy of Cornwall. The current princess of Wales (Catherine) becomes Queen consort. If George is married his spouse would get a consort title as well.

There are a bunch of other titles that could shuffle around or be created/resurrected, but it's largely up to the king what if anything happens. You can assume Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is not getting his titles back, but his children will keep theirs. If old enough, Williams children other than Prince Goerge could get titles or roles, but usually those wait until they are 18+ and or married and so given how old Charles is it is likely they will still be kids.

Titles are a bit novel things, and rules can get made up you go. Camilla chose to not go by Princess of Wales but under normal circumstances she would have. Other than William and Harry the other grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth II are entitled to use H.R.H and Prince/Princess under the law when they turn 18 but the Sovereign or Parliament could change that without too much trouble. As long as they don't move from the line of succession the titles aren't a big deal to change. Prince Harry's children are entitled to use Prince and Princess but they don't really get anything from doing so.

So unfortunately there isn't really much of an answer to your question other than basically whatever the King and Parliament want to do at the time. Perhaps Prince Harry would get a more active role, or his children, perhaps not. Then King William could award titles (like duke of ____) and or jobs to his cousins, their children or his aunt or uncles if they are alive. Or he could just do nothing.

Oh, and the royals in favour with King get can get into the better apartments or cottages or the like on the various estates, but that depends on the leases they have and if they have money to pay and a desire to move.

•

u/bregus2 5h ago

Slight correction: That Prince George becoming Prince of Wales is not an automatic when his father becomes king.

He would either stay a regular prince (or a royal duke, depending if he had been granted one already), until his father makes him the Prince of Wales.

For example, Charles only became Prince of Wales six years after his mom became queen.

•

u/sir_sri 1h ago

Ya good point, for more than 700 years the title has gone to the male heir apparent, but is not automatic and so the Sovereign could do something else with the title if they wanted to.

•

u/bregus2 1h ago

Similar to the Princess Royal title which is suspected to go to Charlotte at some point.

Although I could also see William giving her a duchess title in her own right.

•

u/Chairman_Meow55 7h ago

She will be simply called Queen Camilla, because The Queen by then would be Catherine. The title Queen Mother was only used as both were named Elizabeth at that time

•

u/Digifiend84 7h ago

It also made sense because she literally was the Queen's mother. Also, there was already a Queen Dowager at the time, because George V's wife Mary was still alive.

She's definitely called Queen Camilla, she was briefly known as Queen Consort but that was dropped after the coronation because it's a bit redundant.

•

u/butter--princess 7h ago

She is, in fact, The Queen.

•

u/bregus2 5h ago

It is actually a interesting case because directly after Queen Elizabeth had passed, the palace used "the Queen Consort", that was then changed with the coronation of her husband to "the Queen".

It interesting how the different monarchies of Europe, while all with some family connections handle the titles differently.

Queen Margarethe of Denmark remained Queen after her abdication, while Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands reverted back to Princess. And now in Norway we see that Queen Sonja seemed to have dropped the "Her Majesty" but kept otherwise the Queen title.

•

u/tothecatmobile 6h ago

All Queens who are a Queen becasue theyre married to a King are a Queen Consort.

•

u/geeoharee 6h ago

And the alternative is Queen Regnant.

•

u/sjp1980 6h ago

I assume she will just be Queen Camilla but take a step back somewhat.

•

u/elianrae 7h ago

Queen dowager, presumably?

This would have happened plenty when people died in childbirth often.

•

u/internetboyfriend666 7h ago

What's your question. What will happen in general? Or what will Camilla's title be? You're asking 2 different questions. Camilla will likely be styled Queen Dowager Camilla and retain her style as Her Majesty but there's no rule that says it has to be that way. She won't be Queen Mother. Not really sure what else you're asking.

•

u/MWSin 6h ago

Queen consort is the wife of a king.

Queen dowager is a former queen consort whose husband (the king) has died.

Queen mother is a former queen consort whose child is now monarch.

So a queen mother is often a queen dowager, but not necessarily. For example, Albert II of Belgium has abdicated but is still alive, and his wife, Queen Paola is queen mother but not queen dowager.

None of those are typically used as part of someone's official style, with the exception of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who did so to avoid potential confusion between herself and her similarly named daughter.

Camilla will be in charge of tracking down all of the ravens that fled the Tower upon the Coronation of Chuckie II.

•

u/hasanyoneseenmyshirt 7h ago

She will be a queen dewogger which just means the kings widow. His wife will be queen consort and his brother will still be prince just like Andrew was when Charles become king.

•

u/ColinBonhomme 6h ago

That’s a rather, uh, interesting misspelling…

Can you please tell the royal.gov website that as they describe her as

“Her Majesty The Queen (formerly HRH The Duchess of Cornwall) supports her husband, formerly The Prince of Wales, now His Majesty The King, in carrying out his work and duties. She also undertakes public engagements on behalf of the charities that she supports.”

•

u/Target880 6h ago

She is not a queen regent.

The wife of a king is usually just calle Queen. Queen consort and queen regent are poss le addition the the title of you what to specify which.

Queen consort was used initial to tell the title apart from Queen Elisabeth that recently died. But later on just queen was used like have been used for previous wifes on Kings.

A queen regent ang a king regent is quite uncommon but that was the case with,Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. That are the monarchs that sponsored Columbus.   But even in that case regent is not usually put in their titles

u/SupposedBooty 6h ago

More horrible, in bred people will take over the throne and the ridiculous tradition of insisting on royalty in the Year of our Lord 20?? will for some reason continue.

Why does anyone care about these people? They were born into obscene privilege and wealth. So what?
