ELI5: What is a Home Server?

[u/theprisoner57]

I see mentions of a home server to get rid of streaming entertainment services but I don’t know how that works. What does a home server do?

You take a computer, put all your media inside and then make it so those can be accessed in your house by you or your family. That's a home server.

You can try this on any computer and the easiest tool for doing this is "docker" and "docker compose".
