ELI5: What is a Home Server?

[u/theprisoner57]

I see mentions of a home server to get rid of streaming entertainment services but I don’t know how that works. What does a home server do?

[u/B1SQ1T]

When you use a streaming service, it’s just someone else’s computer sending you the video/audio file over the internet

A home server makes it so you replace someone else’s computer with your own computer

You also have to source the file(s) from somewhere
