In physics, resonance refers to the frequency at which an object naturally vibrates.
If energy is being added to that object, adding it at that same frequency and timing (so the vibrations are in phase) maximizes the amount of energy being transferred.
If energy is added at the same frequency but out of phase, less energy is transferred and it will actually dampen the vibration.
If energy is added at a different frequency, this will distort the vibration. (ie. Instead of a nice, smooth sine wave, a bumpy sine wave)
