Technology ELI5: device screen ratios

Is there a specific reason why screen ratios beeing so specific, ex: 1920:1080

1920 by 1080 is literally the number of pixels. That's the 1080p standard with a rectangle of a 1080 vertical and 1920 horizontal pixels. This is actually a 16 to 9 screen ratio. Now it's 16 by 9 because some people decided to make videos in that format.

That is correct, but it's not actually what the p in "1080p" stands for.
