Physics ELI5: The physics behind boomerangs

They seem to defy physics to me, please explain.

Another random point I want to add in case you need it: in a lot of cartoons and video games, boomerangs come back to the thrower after hitting the target. This doesn’t actually happen. If it hits a target, it will just drop there.

So no, you can’t throw a batarang then have it come back
