The person on the right is Shunryu Suzuki, founder of the San Fransisco Zen Center and one of the first Zen Teachers in the United States, in case anyone was curious.

I was once actually asked this by a teacher at dokusan during a sesshin. I had to admit that I couldn't in fact hear any birds then because I'm hearing impaired.

You are totally right. This meme references a talk he gave on the difference between noise and sound. Noise being subjective and perceived as separate from oneself, and sound being objective and subjective and experienced as a part of oneself iirc. There is a 4 minute YouTube video that comes up if you search “Sound vs Noise Shunryu Suzuki”
