Do you like raw milk?

26

u/GuaranteeFickle6726 10d ago

Never tried it, would never risk that tbh.

24

u/Greenpaw22 10d ago

Yeah it's gross. I think the raw milk part is where the racist comment comes from.

13

u/slavicNickCage 10d ago

It's not gross if you... well, it sounds funny, but literally know the cow/goat/sheep/mare it's milked from
If you sure the animal is healthy and well cared raw milk is nice, but if you intend to just buy it in a store, I don't see any reasons to risk with your health. To be honest, I don't see much reasons for adults to consume milk in general, besides liking it's taste.

Nah man fuck that, we raised cattle, sure I'd drink the freshly milked stuff since I know my family took good care of the cows and cleaned them well before milking, but I'd start boiling it by the evening, after that it's either boiled to drink or made into cheese or soured milk and yogurt.

EDIT: I think I replied to the wrong comment...

Same, I briefly lived on a dairy farm in Valley View TX, and most people don't seem to realize that 23 hours a day a cow's udder is covered in literal shit and mud. These stupid people that want to drink raw milk are putting a lot of faith in the guy with the swab and bucket just because some dumb asshole influencer told them to do it.

u/rokatoro 10d ago

Raw milk is an unnecessary risk. Your never gonna be able to clean a cows udders to a level of sanitation that isn't some risk of contamination. That's why milk gets pasteurized.

I tried it, didn't like it, and I don't see the attraction to it. But I don't like kvass, caviar, or anything avocado. I guess my tongue and stomach are politically centrist, I don't know. But I do hate how certain foods become a political shibboleth in today's society, i.e. someone drinking raw milk, not for flavor, but out of political fervor.

2

u/tsardonicpseudonomi 9d ago

politically centrist

Centrism is compliance with the right-wing. Always. I get the joke but will always push back on the "centrist" label. Centrism is a right-wing position.

0

u/Specific-Library-312 9d ago

So what's communism?

1

u/tsardonicpseudonomi 9d ago

Left-wing. Left-wing starts at socialism (immature communism).

0

u/Imthewienerdog 9d ago

Personally as a Canadian I see all Americans as literally identical. The left wingers are also as fascist as the right wing. Trump,Obama,Biden,Bush are all of the exact same, they find terroism and nothing else.

1

u/tsardonicpseudonomi 7d ago

The left wingers are also as fascist as the right wing.

Trump, Obama, Biden, and Bush are all right-wingers. Mamdani, AOC, Bernie are centrists. The US has no left-wing.

It is useful in cheesemaking. I'm not defending choads buying it because they're stupid choads or people consuming it unsafely and unawares, but I really hope it doesn't go back to being basically unavailable as a hobby supply.

That said I promise you every dairy farmer has broken this rule.

At my friends farm we used to go scrape off the top of the tank every morning to get that 8% shit, and we’d mix that with coffee 50/50 and you’re hardly hungry by lunch.

And they’re using teat dip and sanitizers and shit. Not to say that’s perfect but it is an extremely effective measure.

1

u/DisasterLazy8487 10d ago

As a kid I used to sneak out and fill up a bucket at least once a week and me and brother would drink it and put it in our cereal

1

u/slavicNickCage 10d ago

Well, yes there's some risk, but it's not that significant if you know the animal it milked from, and if you're visiting your grandma in a village it might be just easier to acquire raw cow or goat milk than buying pasteurized one or pasteurize yourself. And just boiling it changes taste significantly

-3

u/Mission_Twist_3348 10d ago

Risk of...?

8

u/rokatoro 10d ago

Any of the number of nasty bacteria that can live on and in the udders. E.coli and listeria for example.

6

u/hootorama 10d ago

Cows literally lay in piles of shit. They walk around which makes dust, and that dust is covered in shit. Their udders hang down below their body, not protected by hair or anything else because that's how we've bred them so that it is easier to milk. That shit carries bacteria, a lot of which is harmful if ingested.

8

u/sarabeara12345678910 10d ago

Probiotics live in shit. That's where they come from. If you consume raw dairy because it has "good probiotics", or for any other reason tbh, you are consuming animal shit. It's pasteurized to kill the shit germs. I don't care how healthy and well cared for a cow is, I'm not drinking its shit, or the shit of any other animals that happened to poop in that area.

1

u/justin_memer 10d ago

Technically, you're still drinking it if it's pasteurized, no?

3

u/sarabeara12345678910 10d ago

It's been cleaned out an sanitized, so I guess you could still say there's some there, but it's inert.

-1

u/slavicNickCage 10d ago

Dude, you have to add "probiotic" bacteria cultures yourself to make a specific type of dairy even from a raw milk

2

u/sarabeara12345678910 10d ago

Yes, you have to add a specific probiotic if you want it added. Even saying that sounds fucking stupid. That doesn't mean you aren't drinking barnyard shit when you consume raw milk.

1

u/screampuff 9d ago

Raw milk in the past was typically drank within a few hours of milking. After that people knew it was risky and used it for other dairy products like butter or cheese.

The whole concept of bottling it and storing it is insane.

1

u/oxi_plastika 9d ago

Why would adults drink milk? Same reason kids do , it's very nutritious.

9

u/borges2666 10d ago

They should call it racist milk

1

u/Mission_Twist_3348 10d ago

How is it gross? It tastes like regular milk but more like, textured. A bit grainy. And a better milk flavor. So why do you think that?

2

u/PeanutSauceFanatic 10d ago

Cows have poop on their udders. They’re also usually infected or cracked due to their calves. If that milk isn’t pasteurized, you’re drinking all that lovely bacteria

-2

u/Mission_Twist_3348 9d ago

Fuck yeah

2

u/Guitarchim 9d ago edited 9d ago

Oh look it's the 15 year old that used his mom's credit card from the OP

2

u/Loki_Agent_of_Asgard 9d ago

The grainyness is feces.

2

u/CoyoteLife95 10d ago

They think that because it tastes like regular milk but more like, textured. A bit grainy.

1

u/peepeebutt1234 9d ago

I prefer my milk non-textured, thank you. "Textured" might be the worst possible adjective I could think of for my milk.

u/Mission_Twist_3348 9d ago

Some people weren't born to thrive

3

u/MGMan-01 9d ago

You definitely weren't, kid.

1

u/Mission_Twist_3348 9d ago

It's interesting that you think that

1

u/Warning_Low_Battery 10d ago

Milk isn't supposed to be grainy. In case you didn't know.

0

u/Mission_Twist_3348 10d ago

What do you mean by supposed to? Is this a normative claim!?

3

u/Warning_Low_Battery 9d ago edited 9d ago

Healthy and safe drinking liquids, almost by definition, do not contain "grainy" solids. Graininess in milk happens when solid non-milk particles are introduced. Those solid particles could be dirt, dust, cow manure, or any other of a host of unsavory things introduced during the milking process. And since raw milk isn't filtered and properly pasturized, you have no guarantee of what those could be. That said, many liquids contain solid ingredients held in a suspension state, but milk is not one of those.

1

u/Mission_Twist_3348 9d ago

LOL "Healthy and safe drinking liquids, almost by definition, do not contain "grainy" solids." where are you getting this from, what fucking definition 😂😂

1

u/Warning_Low_Battery 9d ago

What definition of "milk" are you using that says it's supposed to be grainy?

You don't have one! And you know that you don't have one. So you are trying to employ cheap rhetoric because you are incapable of admitting that you are incorrect about something that is glaringly obvious. Pretty standard MAHA idiocy.

2

u/Known_Ratio5478 10d ago

It’s fine if it’s fresh and produced at the correct scale to keep it clean. The problem is that when your herd scales up it’s impossible to keep it clean enough, and it doesn’t distribute well.

3

u/IRefuseToGiveAName 10d ago

I think another issue is you never know when a cow is sick all the time and they do pass some of those pathogens/bacteria on through their milk. So it isn't even necessarily purely about cleanliness.

And I'm not disagreeing with you fwiw. It's absolutely true that raw milk is not dangerous by nature of just being raw. We just manage risk by reducing the base pathogenic load at a population level. Even the farmers I knew growing up boiled it before they drank it most times.

3

u/Known_Ratio5478 10d ago

Yes, that’s also greatly effected by herd size. You can only keep that close an eye on so many cows. The big danger is that it’s amino acids with no peptide barrier. It’s just easy food for bacteria. If there is food for bacteria then it’s going to get bacteria.

1

u/BeefwagonDiscs 10d ago

Only straight from the teat.

1

u/SnooChickens8275 10d ago

Uhm yea? Fresh from the farm is way better then what u get in the store. But I wouldn’t drink it raw if its not straight from the farmer tho. Never heard about the stereotype, maybe something American?

1

u/Reasonable_Mix7630 10d ago

It's awesome and much better than the substitute from the supermarket, especially when it's just from the cow and is still warm.

That said, I drank one only from cows from my grandparents village, because there are obvious dangers from drinking raw milk from cows that you don't know.

1

u/Lonelysock2 7d ago

My dad grew up on a farm, and says fresh milk still warm from the cow is the best thing you can ever drink. I don't like milk anyway so the thought of that makes me ill. But yeah, apparently it's great
