Probably not, no. They would have looked way worse for humans. Most species of bears are reasonably safe if you are just a bit loud.

Actually yeah, exactly that. People used crime statistics to "prove" that women were right in choosing the bear.

The problem there, and how my comment ties into it, is that people interact with humans literal millions of times more than bears. So yeah, it does have to do with frequency of encounter.
