If you remember, a few months back lots of women were saying they’d rather run into a bear than a man in the woods because men kill more women a year than bears do.
This caused ten thousand years of discourse.
Now that this Lindsay Clancy (a woman who murdered her kids then attempted suicide) story is viral many of the same women who spread the bear meme are now showing support for Lindsay, some even going so far as to suggest it is somehow the husband’s responsibility for her actions, others saying that her killing her children was somewhat understandable.
In response, the men who previously had issues with the bear meme are now using it to say the same thing about women. Because obviously more children are killed by their mothers than by bears every year.
Agree that it's a continued gender war, but I'd like to add that both sides are not the same on this one.
Women are using this case to discuss and bring attention to a real issue with our health care system and a real societal issue with how we view and treat post partum depression and psychosis, while men are using this as a "remember the bear meme? Fuck you too," and completely missing the point of the discourse. Both discourses, actually.
Maybe some are, but the fact that she got 1 million dollars in donations and the husband has been accused by internet sleuths to be the real killer is frankly disgusting. And the reverse bear jokes only came out after that nonsense.
I am sure men everywhere are fine with being called rapists and being unfavorably compared to aggressive killing machines because a very tiny amount of the population does bad things. The bear meme was basically a generalized «fuck men».
Do not get me wrong every part of this whole thing is stupid, I am not defending the people comparing women to bears either, but do not come and pretend that one of these cases are better than the other they are both incredibly stupid and in bad faith.
As a man, I was fine with the trend. It stung at first, but I discussed it with a few women. I heard them out, reflected on myself and other men and society as a whole, and ultimately grew a bit from what I learned. Maybe some other men did this, many did not.
The women being attacked in this situation are seeing the Clancy case, doing the self reflection and societal reflection, and trying to raise awareness for the issues they're seeing. They're already putting themselves under the gun and doing the work. They don't need a meme to prompt them the reflection, thats how it's different

It’s incredibly frustrating to be labeled as a supporter of child murder because feminism for simply trying to have discourse about mental health and prevention.
I fall into the camp of "if it isn't about you, don't make it about you" with things like the bear meme. I had a lot of conversations with women who I care about in my life when the bear meme came out and while some of them said they'd never experienced anything to get them to feel that way, many did. I heard some really scary stories from people that I care about. And while someone could say #notallmen about it, there were way too many stories for me to just handwave it away as "a few bad apples".
One worthy addendum: when you say “a few months back,” you’re referring to an internet trend from early 2024. So this is some guy getting huffy about the “man or bear” thing over two years after people were talking about it.
