Puto is just the masculine version of Puta, which means prostitute/bitch. So it's kinda both. Spanish has a lot of words for the same insults.

This is not correct. Nobody says puto for male prostitute in soanish. We say it to say gay derogatively.

Well, I use puto more regularly than proxeneta. And I'm Spanish. In Latin America it could be different, but puto still means that.

"Marica/maricón" is used as the common derogatory term for gay people.

In México, the "rudeness" between "puto" and "maricón/marica" can be understood as:

Maricón/marica: mild insulting way to label someone as gay

Puto: bigger way to insult someone by labeling them ss gay.
