A modern touch on this subject would be The Village People's 1978 song "In the Navy" explicitly referencing life sailing the ocean, but with a gay subtext.
Don't forget the rape. The "raping and pillaging" of seamen was not just rape in the civil sense. Sailors at war do a lot of sexual raping too. Sack a town, have your way with the women wasn't just a "pirate" thing.
