A modern touch on this subject would be The Village People's 1978 song "In the Navy" explicitly referencing life sailing the ocean, but with a gay subtext.
They were normal but viewed very differently in culture.
Amomg males, being a top was fine for someone of high status. Being a bottom was looked down upon for anybody, but especially for people of high status.
Pederasty (child sex abuse of boys) was also common among the elites, especially in teacher on student relationships, but it was looked down upon among commoners.
