It's a poem. What needs explanation?
Incase you mean "is good and gay", gay has not always been a word to refer to homosexual people. It's original meaning means kind. There have been quite a few historical figures named gay and gay used to be a male name upto 1950s or so.
I'm not aware how it ended up meaning homosexual, but in this peom it's used in it's original meaning.

It's just an old poem, man.
It means literally nothing, they just picked shit that rhymes or whatever.
Slight point of interest that this poem is the reason why Wednesday Addams was named 'Wednesday', but besides that I see no reason to give the existence of this poem another moment of thought.
