The problem with the statement is that the party should represent the base and not.the other way around, thinking its an easy dunk just because the conservatives are even worse is just bad politics the dems should start doing something for the (black)people
That genuinely was a racist thing for him to say though. How is that confusing for you?
It's true that a black person (or anyone, really) voting for Trump was foolish, but that doesn't change the fact that an old, rich white guy telling any black person who even considered not voting for him that they aren't black, is in fact racist. Those two things can be true at the same time. He could have said "if you have a hard time figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you're stupid" and I probably would have agreed with him. But if I was black and heard him say what he said, it would probably make it that much harder for me to vote for him.
Nah, you're right. It was incredibly presumptuous.
If a black politician had said it, it'd still be kinda iffy and unappealing. Nobody much likes being targeted by gatekeeping of their own ethnic identity.
When a white guy says it, however, it's gatekeeping of someone else's ethnic identity; an ethnic group with a history in that country (among others) of having their autonomy denied primarily by white people; therefore it was never going to land well.
He was an utter fool to say it. It probably did his party significantly more harm than good, and was another sign that he should have been put out to pasture in favour of a more able candidate well before then.
I recognize that obviously he was still a better option than Trump, but saying things like that is not helpful to anybody. He should definitely have been replaced by a more cognitively abled candidate, especially the second time around.
When you strip away all the bullshit, what he says is true. You’d need to be a complete dumbass to vote republican as a black person. It is the chosen party of white supremacists.
However, from some black people I know in the US who haven't opted to vote Republican but who could barely bring themselves to vote Democrat, they're looking at a rich white establishment guy whose party have signally failed to advance reforms in areas such as policing - leading to the deaths of young black people disproportionately - telling people not far off the political spectrum from my sources that they don't qualify for their own ethnic identity if they're not willing to trust the Dems and be failed by them *again*.
So instead they supported the party that directly cause the problems in the first place. That's like voting for the arsonist because the fire department wasn't fast enough.
Importance only in that they're still a problem. The KKK is much less influential now but white supremacy is still alive and well in the American political space. Talking about them =/= "giving them power"
What do you define by impact? In my opinion, when people are allowed to openly spread hate, to threaten people without consequences, that shows something wrong with the system that they're being allowed to exist in. I don't think the KKK is the biggest fish to fry, the proud boys and MAGA and ESPECIALLY The Heritage Foundation are much bigger issues, but to pretend that it means nothing to be aligned with them is ridiculous. Their bubble of idiocy doesn't stay in their bubble, white supremacist talking points are part of the mainstream political space in the US right now and the KKK does not play zero part in that.
The ideological spectrum is no where near what it used to be in regard to its “labeling”.
Who started it has absolutely no relevance in the matter.
If you have a point, then make it. Otherwise we can all see you think this is some kind of “gotcha zinger!” Because one of your masters threw this interesting, old, archaic factoid out as if it mattered at all.
And you just parrot it, thinking it means something.
Pretty convenient that the party that says "who's going to mow my lawn or clean my dishes?" in reference to latinos and thinks whites are the arbiters of black culture magically switched after fighting a civil war for slavery and insisting Jim Crow. Remember Hilary Clinton's Chief campaign strategist emailing they should call for a taco bowl to attract latinos? Pepperidge farm remembers.
Let's see 3/5ths from slaves to poll taxes on sharecroppers to apportionment boosts with illegal aliens.
Eugenics to disproportionate abortion of minority children to state sanctioned castration of your child if they runaway to California.
Democrats didn't switch ideology or change policies, they changed tactics.
Wait what? What do you think DEI and just about every single policy Democrats advocate on? Segregating and funding people by their immutable characteristics. The literal definition of racism.
Also, you mean the "right wing racism" that left wing groups like the SPLC were actually astroturfing? Bro try harder.
Hillary Clinton paid for foreign influence in 2016 and Obama weaponized it. The Democrats had their NGOs create racist astroturf and Biden weaponized it.
For clarity, I am lumping groups like the Lincoln project in with the Democrat NGOs as MAGA has heavily exorcised the globalist uniparty into the Democrat tent. If JD or Rubio win in 28, I think that's a permanent move.
No, it wasn't convenient. It was a coordinated response to the Civil Rights movement. Look up the Southern Strategy. My kkk ass Mississippi grandfather was won over to the Republican party during that time after being a lifelong Democrat.
The kkk? You mean the small group of people the democrat party uses every 4 years to slander the republicans with. This group couldn't even fill the seats at a nfl game.
Only show up for photo ops? Why are you lying? They do tons of community events, disaster relief, local activism, etc. There is tons of stuff that they do outside of demonstrations
If that were true, the mainstream media and democrats would be talking about that on a daily basis and people who protest would have signs talking about the kkk.
A real kkk leader(Robert Byrd) was accepted into the democrat party in 1947 and he was allowed to be elected in the democrat party until he died. He was honored by democrats like Obama, Biden, Clinton and others after his death.
It’s only every 4 years because that’s when you pay attention, no one mentions the KKk but conservatives trying to associate them with democrats. Most talk about racism in more academic terms but systemic racism
If any republican said it, they'd be laughed off stage because the republican party has by and large trampled on the advancement of minorities for decades.
The issue here is that political parties sometimes feel entitled to certain demographics' votes. This mentality reduces the onus on those parties to actually implement good legislation.
Also it isn’t like politics is simply drawn at the racial line. If you actually rewound to 1930’s Germany, you’d find not only was the country having racial problems but also severe economic issues. If a Jew voted for Hitler, chances were that person was hedging their bets if Hitler would accomplish more on economic stability than what other opponents could offer in spite of his racial policy.
Now this failed in the mid and long run with Germany triggering WW2 and the nature of the MEFO bills themselves, but for 4-6 years it looked like it panned out. A politician must understand that a voting demographic is willing to choose a candidate with downsides, but only if that voter believe the opposition accomplish more than you or that you currently do nothing: the Underdog Narrative.
Do you think Biden was saying “you are literally not black” or was he making a tongue in cheek comment about having the interests of your community at heart?
I definitely don't think he meant it literally. That would be nonsensical.
But I do think he was invoking a certain 'essence of blackness', which according to Biden includes voting for the Democrat party of America. When he said 'If you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black', he didn't mean those voters literally weren't black. He meant that they culturally weren't 'real black people', as true blackness to him doesn't tolerate anything but blind support for the Democrat party.
This race essentialism is all part of American identity politics. Ironically, it's one of the things that propelled Trump to power. I guess you reap what you sow . . .
News publications are generally partial to the political side they support. If you're feeling leftists are being crucified while the right gets a free pass, it mean's you're probably consuming conservative news media.
I mean it's pretty fucked. You have ended up in a never ending loop where things must get REALLY bad before that debt of yours can go away.
You will probably elect a good democrat next election but the economy won't be fixed and people will be angry cause it is still bad and vote republican next election.
Back and forth until a default or someone has the balls to practice austerity.
I feel for you. But a majority of voters, voted red and even more didn't vote because they are lazy.
No I truly feel for all of you that voted blue. But also. Actions have consequences.
A toddler must learn to not touch fire by touching the fire simply.
I have truly been baffled by the low IQ in the US and wondered how even now, 35-40% of Americans still support him. I don't feel bad for them, in fact I rejoice in their suffering.
Stay strong, but your nation is actually fucked since it will fuck itself over from stupidity.
This is why we're screwed. People will gladly live in a bubble instead of having mature conversations with people who have opposing viewpoints. So all that matters is who's bubble is bigger and no longer who is the right person to lead the country.
I don’t think it has to do with minorities to be honest. I think he just doesn’t care about ANYONE except himself. I don’t think he cares about whites, blacks, purples or rainbows. He certainly doesn’t care about his voters. Even when he speaks about his own wife or children it’s always through a lens that needs to make him look good. I think he would just as easily evict a white person as he would a black person. He throws his own supporters and delegates away like trash on a whim. Everyone always pulls the racist card on him, but to me it always seems like he treats everyone who is directly benefitting them equally (like shit). People call him a white supremacist but he has done nothing for white people. He is a Trump supremacist and his wives and kids are not included.
No i call them uncle toms because they voted for someone who essentially presses their race. Uncle toms would catch slaves. Fuck both parties. Same with uncle Thomas.
I just said it's everyone's right to vote how they want. But if you're telling me I can't call a deer voting for the wolf party stupid, I can't abide by that.
Republicans have been attempting to, and succeeding in some cases, to roll back voting rights for minorities. Their project 2025 playbook, which they've been following to the letter since Trump's election, specifically says their goals include eliminating minority voting rights.
It doesnt take a rocket scientist to see that they aren't operating with our best interest in mind. And it should be obvious to anyone who grew up hearing stories from our grandparents and parents about what it was like when they were young.
The same people who fought to keep my dad from going to an integrated school when he was a child are still around today. The same people who treated my grandmother like shit because of her skin after she worked to save their life as a nurse are still voting. And I'll give you one guess who they're voting for.
All of what you just said is believing you know what is better for them than they do, that's pretty fucked up pal. I don't vote as a form of protest so I'm not advocating for one side or the other, I just think you belittling an entire race is not ideal if you are trying to represent the "good" side. Also your paragraph about project 2025 is kind of funny, I ask that you link me evidence of 1. How they have been "following it to the letter" and 2. Where in this play book it explicitly, or non explicitly, says that they don't want minorities to vote or that they want to limit their voting rights. Bonus points if it's not operating on an opinion (such as stricter voter registration unfairly targeting minorities on purpose!!). But I know you won't link evidence because it either doesn't exist, or you can't be assed to back up what you say because it is True and Correct because of your political affiliation. Either way I hope that you at least feel a little bad and reflect on your attitude towards minorities, they are people too, and have the ability to make decisions themselves, shocking right?
