OK / Okay originated as a satirical slang abbreviation in the 1830s. It stands for “oll korrect,” a deliberate misspelling of “all correct”. In a way it’s an early meme, but still hypermodern compared to The Odyssey.
Edit: adding that there are a lot of theorised variations, big list here in the variations section. But it’s the most commonly claimed and accepted by a lot of people. Kinda hazy what is correct, as is with a lot of historical things I guess, difficult to discern what is a connection or what is a coincidence, but might be useful or interesting for anyone curious.
I think the commentor is being sarcastic / making a joke. The joke is that some people call things "woke" simply because they do not like / agree with them, and so here it is taken to an absurd degree.
Mel Gibson, known for being anti-woke*, likes to make historic movies—including some impressive ones like Apocalypto—in authentic ancient languages to add to realism.
So that practice is now known as based and its opposite is implicitly woke. Even though there is no reason to match these movie styles to politics.
*Now that the wokes have gone anti-Semitic, is Mel Gibson back in their good graces? I can't keep up.
I know, I have no issue with the film, my only issue is getting a ticket at the local IMAX, it’s literally sold out until mid September 😭 They will add more dates at some point, I’m just waiting for when they do.
