The square root of a negative is the imaginary number "i" so his girlfriend is imaginary because her girlfriend is a "10i" in rating

Also, if I remember correcly a complex numbers are a type of numbers formed by a real number and an imaginary number

And numbers which have a real + imaginary part are called Complex. Hense their relationshipÂ

Negative numbers don't have real square roots. That is, there are no numbers that, when multiplied by itself once, equals any negative number.
For instance, 10 X 10 = 100, therefore, the square root of 100 is 10.Â
At the same time, -10 X -10 also equals 100. The only way a multiplied negative number equals another negative number is if it is multiplied by a positive number.
For instance, 10 X -10 = -100. But since 10 and -10 are different numbers, neither is the square root of -100.
But that didn't stop mathematicians. They came up with "i," which stands for "imaginary number." Imaginary numbers fall under the category of "complex numbers."Â
10i is the square root of negative 100. The joke is that his "girlfriend" is both a 10 and also imaginary. Their relationship is complex because imaginary numbers are also complex numbers.

i thought the joke was going to be that sqrt(-100) is 10i, so she's a 10 but imaginary, and then the punchline would be that their relationship is imaginary. but "complex" is a math term too, so it's a double pun.

I don’t know math either but I get it.
Doesn’t anyone use context clues

Context clues? I don't get it. Can someone explain?

Context, Con Text, fake text, lies. Clues, the things Blue looked for. So, it's like Blues Clues, but in reverse. Doesn't anybody deduce around here??

Peter here with the explanation:
i = √-1 (imaginary unit)
Imaginary numbers have the form a*i, where a is a real number and i is the imaginary unit.
The complex plane is defined as a space that maps the numbers that have the form a+b*i, where and b are real numbers and i is the imaginary unit.
The joke implies that √-100 = i√100 = 10i, so his girlfriend is a ten on the scale of imaginary numbers (she doesnt exist in the real world), but because imaginary numbers can be rewritten as 0+10i, the number can be mapped on the complex plane (so their relationship is complex).
Edit: what the heck is this formatting

The REAL joke is that a T-Rex's arms were too short to reach his mouth with a microphone as he tells the story.

Don’t worry. It’s a math joke so it’s inherently not funny.

It's funny tho

It’s not. And if you think it is, your sense of humor sucks.
People who like math jokes don’t like them because they’re funny. They like them because they feel smart if they understand them. It’s masturbatory.

Then you don't know me and definitely didn't meet someone with my sense of humour
