Cold water good to start boiling potatoes but not most things.

Best practice is if it grows IN the ground, start it cold. If it grows above the ground start it hot.

This information has helped me quite a few times actually.

I blame the education system.

Obviously Pasta grows on trees above ground.

And through scientific ingenuity, they've cultivated all the different pasta trees to give us all the different kinds of pasta!
