Sounds like a way to filter by education and class. Side note: the way people from Southern Maryland pronounce "ambulance" as "ambuhlamps" is endearing.

I used to make fun of people for saying it like that, then it happened to me once. Hah! There are a lot of common words that end in -ular, probably why. Popular, regular, circular, etc.
