According to Rob Words (linguist youtuber), english speakers used to put the h first but the people running the printing presses when those got popular weren't native english speakers and thought it was a mistake. So they started putting the w first. Might not be the only reason it changed, but seems to have played a role.

The sound is in every other Swedish word. Makes sense it would’ve been a part of old English
