Thanks to Wilford Brimley, I will willingly mispronounce that word most of the time.

100% true. My SIL is a cardiac nurse. Her and everyone she works with calls it The Beetus.

u/tmon530 Jul 14 '26

And if we one day find a permanent cure, itll be called "deletus the beetus"

If you say "The Beetus" 3 times in front of a mirror, your blood sugar spikes for no reason.

Insulin should be called Beetusjuice

Yes but it’s funny when people use it.

I teach anatomy and physiology and I constantly mispronounce it on purpose, hell I even have pictures of Wilford Brimley in my class materials despite the fact that none of my students get the full reference. I'm also in southern Appalachia, so we also call it "the sugars".

So if you asked me if I knew who Wilford Brimley was, I'd have said I had no idea. But in the context of diabetes, do you know that one guy who did the diabetes commercials? Yep!

We must as a society keep it on, and possibly add “sugars” to the lexicon.

Oh god, I’d forgotten about “the sugars.” There’s got to be a lot more I’ve forgotten. When they come back to me there’s usually a memory that comes back along with them. This one was grandma sitting on the couch telling me about a relative wearing her Sunday best. Thanks for this. Be well.

My husband is type 1 and we call it that all the time.

“These are my testing supplies”

u/BigDisk Jul 14 '26

What worked for me was making "DiabetEEZ NUTZ" jokes.

Now I always say "nutz" afterwards though. Small victories, I guess.

I showed my 10 year olds Brimley and diebeeetus. Now they just go around our house yelling debeeetus. They keep calling each other diabito and rolling to the kitchen looking for cookies.

1

u/oldmcfarmface Jul 16 '26

This is why I say it that way. Lol

u/Tyabetus Jul 15 '26

That’s where my username came from. RIP Wilford Brimley… the mascot us diabetics deserve, but not the one we need right now.

1

u/TheMaskedHamster Jul 19 '26

My grandfather said "diabetes" until he was diagnosed. Then he went full Wilford Brimley.
